Ok guys,

Sorry DK for my error, when the timing marks are lined up no1 cylinder has both valves fully closed and the 'arms' can wiggle (I should mention they are roller rockers).

Non firing I determined by getting the engine to sort of idle as well as it can on 2 cylinders and then pull the plugs. Pulling cylinders 1 and 4 kill the engine. Cylinders 2 and 3 do nothing to the engine sound or revs.

I did the thumb test and all cylinders push my thumb away.

Something I have noticed, The sparking plugs on 2 and 3 are dry, which is confusing. There is a faint smell of fuel but nothing excessive.

The Carb is backfiring every so often, usually killing the engine dead.

Thank you all for your help.

From what you have now said, i am convinced you have the leads in the wrong order.

Works fine now!!! actually it works really well.

It knocks a bit I think which is worrying me now, however I do have constant 80Psi oil pressure. Is it likely I'm being paranoid?

Another TMF success.

You'll have to set the timing and mixture now it's running!

Yes absolutely, I've never come across an A-series engine that revs so crazy. I touched the throttle and it just explodes into life.

I need to check the timing as you said, and the mixture I'll have to do as well as I can on the plugs at the moment, next stage, put the rest back together and take for an MOT

Check that you have the HT leads in the right order.

Dave, I have never made things "sticky".  Could you take Yoda's picture and put it in the FAQ section so we can reference it in future posts?
