Hi Guys,

Been minimad for a lot of years starting with a 1968 Austin mini 850 thirty years ago to a honda engined Z cars mini self built in 2006.  In 2010 I added active technologies throttle bodies and SC typhoon ECU, which was a great improvement, did a couple of track days and drag race or two with no real problems. However, work commitments led to the car being of the road for a couple of years. I Recently decided to get it back on the road, much servicing cleaning and tinkering later managed to get it running, taxed and MOT'd.

Big disappointment when I took it out for its first real run, after about 2 miles the engine cut out and stopped and would not start. Engine turned over but did not fire, let it stand for about 5mins and it started. Set off again only to cut out again in about 200 yards, this time it wouldn't start again for about 15 mins. Did this once more before I managed to get it back home.

I suspected electrical gremlins so set about all checking for loose connections bad earths etc, found one of the two small relays, behind the passenger seat was making a humming clicking noise and the other was a bit hot so replaced them both. No difference still cuts out.  The really frustrating thing is, up to it cutting out its running great, comes on to cam and really takes off.

Has anyone out there encountered a similar problem or can suggest a solution?

I would really appreciate some help with this one.

Thanks in advance

Worth checking the fuel pump and relay, had a golf in which did the exact same.

Couldn't be something as simple as just still having really old fuel in it? Take it you've got new stuff in there?

Pump runs OK when I turn the key, suppose it could be tripping out when I run it. not sure which relay controls the fuel pump, as I said I have replaced the the two small ones behind the seat they seem to be working OK. Only one big relay left which again seems to be OK. Yes fresh petrol used.

Can you leave it idling for any amount of time, or is it only when being driven that it cuts out?

Funny you should say that because just been running it in the garage. Seems that it may be temp related because it cuts out as the temp on the digi dash gets to 84 and the fan starts. Disconnected the fan, still cuts out. Disconnected the temp sensor, still cuts out.  There must be another sensor because the fan still starts and stops. The engine starts again  when the fan stops and the relays reset.

I was going to suggest a blocked fuel breather as I had a car do something similar. Took the fuel cap off and it started straight away.
