Took the rear bumper off to respray and found this - same but not as bad the other side. Rest looks fine.

Just paid 1400 to get sills and floor repairs done so no cash to get this fixed properly. Have committed the cardinal sin of wire brushing back to metal (as best could) , filling it and respraying until I can raise funds.

Car is dry stored and not used in rain - big job to get this done next year? Will be SORNd in October

That lip is made up of 3 panels, the boot floor, rear panel and valance.

What are the valance closing panels like?

Is there any rot in the boot floor?

The sealant will be hiding something. In all honesty you will need to replace all three sections that form the lip. Hopefully nothing has started going up the lower panel at all. The rust will travel along the lip internally.

Just telling it like it is. I have recently changed the back end on a Mini Special and its surprising how far rust will travel even under sealant. You might get lucky but then you might not.

So when you say back end - and forgive my lack of knowledge - are you saying all the panels?! quarters, rear , valance?  As this sounds mega mega expensive and I'll just have to sell up.

you might get away with just removing the rear valance repair the rust and replace the valance with a new one and possibly the closing panels depends how bad they are

Thanks.

The valance is actually in really good order.  Been to the local mini specialists who've had a look around and think that a small fabricated lip section can be made - the bad cut out and the plate welded in.

At worst, this should buy me some time to save up loadsa cash rather than a bodge with filler - and at best it may solve the issue.  There are only 2 sections (4-5 inches) on the corners of the lips that have suffered - the central part under the hinges is solid, the underneath is solid, the boot is solid.

Will try and post some pics later when I get home - I just don't want to leave it and do nothing as I beleive this will just mean more £'s in the long run!

You will need three layers of metal for each repair section, one for the rear panel lip, one for the floor lip and one for the valance lip. That is to do the job properly.

Due to excessive rust i had to replace the full bottom section of the rear panel including hinge area. The full boot lip edge and a complete rear valance.

On my sons car i had to do pretty much the same apart from a full boot floor replacement. I have this job to do on my Clubman as well but the rear panel will be replaced from just under the rear windscreen down and the complete boot floor and valance due to accident damage.

If the rear valance is salvageable then happy days, however from experience the rust travels under the flanges.

I would get the worst off the rust out, throw some rust preventer/zinc primer and fill and paint it.

It will be fine for a year or two

I would start by cutting out the area in blue to replace with this

http://www.somerford...products_id=357

Once that is out of the way, remove the entire rear valance, that way you can see the extent of the rust to the boot floor. You can then cut out the rotten part of the boot floor and fabricate up a new piece. That can then be seam welded to the existing boot floor before fitting the part linked above and a new rear valance.

Repeat it for the other corner if its the same but do it before fitting the new rear valence.

So assuming that the rust hasn't travelled up the rear panel, I could get a new valance, closing panels and a boot lip and have them welded into place.

So first question is - can you buy just the boot lip?  I couldnlt see it on Mini Spares.

Also - in terms of time, how long would you estimate replacing these parts would take (the assumption being you're a bl**dy good welder!)
