I have a mini 1000cc manual engine, with big ends gone. I have also a mini 1000 auto with break bands gone in the auto gear-box.
My question is can i strip the auto gear-box off, and use the engine for the manual with the duff ends? if you could confirm or not, whether it would be possible, i would be most gratefull. Billtheminiman

hi bill

i don't think it is possible to swap an auto engine for a manual, as I believe the block castings are different. I'm not 100% sure exactly in what way, but i've seen posts in the past saying its not possible to do it. Sorry to disappoint!

If you are going to the trouble of splitting the gearbox and block why not just replace the big ends (and everything else at the same time) it is not that difficult or expensive to do.

It isnt possible to interchange to two, they are differnt :D Big ends are only around £30 at the most. While you at it, you'll need to get the crank measured by your local engineers (who can suply the bearings) to find out what size you need. You might find it needs a re-grind which should cost around £20. And if you replacing the big ends you would be as well to change the mains and thrusts too. The whole job including gaskets should cost less than £100.

Cheers everyone, your probably right.

What about a manual 1000 gearbox goin on a 1275 engine.? Would the same apply.

i have also a 1275 engine with a shot gear-box, what about exchanging the gearbox from the duff engine onto the 1275.?

This is possible. If you use the 998 'box tho, you'll need to change the 3 drop gears to the 1275.

On a normal engine you have stick which you have to attempt to shift the gears with. Auto does it for you :D

Just kidding, the auto block is different, im pretty sure the gearbox mounting points are different, the subframe is also different

the crankshaft on an auto is differant to take a torque converter instead of a flywheel and the block has no dipstick hole .
