Hello,

Has anything changed with Hammerite recently? I've used the spray cans many times with great results but when i've been spraying my heater the coverage is terrible. Coat after coat and you can see straight through it, it's really watery and will run without any reason!

It's taken a lot to get a decent shine on it and it's really put me off buying the brand again.

Hammerite have changed recently, probably has something to do with water based paint/solvents in paint etc,  and I think might have joined with/taken over by dulux.

Even the brush on stuff in the tins has gone all watery and rubbish, takes a few coats now whereas before one would have covered everything.

We've been using a lot of Hycote stuff recently, no problems so far.

found exactly the same with black smoothrite. it was almost see through on any edge i painted. no matter how it was prepped. wont bother buying it again.

had some gloss made up at local autopaint supplies. cheaper and far better quality

Well that explains it then.

I used the Hammerite satin black spray a while back and it took about 5 coats to get a half decent coverage, it also said no need for primer which turned out to be a bit of a joke really.

I won't be using it again.

Glad to see it's not just me then, I was beginning to wonder if I'd just got crap at painting stuff!

I havr a load of their old paints in the cupboard. New vs old hammerite is like night and day. Their red lead is still amazing imo. Had a ca which I did work on sat outside for 2 years with only that covering repairs and not one little spot of rust anywhere. But their top coats are awful. For top coats I ust go to the local paint shop and buy a litre of coach enamel for like £10 in whatever colour I want!

It's made a nice simple heater restoration into a right pain in the arse, expensive too having to buy a couple of cans of hammerite then buy something else that actually does the job!
