Hi

I stripped down my SC box last night to give it a clean out but as i was taking the main shaft out i noticed 2 small ball bearings in the bottom of the box as i lifted it out. I am guessing these have fallen out the syncro?

Full strip of the shaft to re fit them?

Thanks

Nick

If the main shaft is out, then you can strip it as far as the synchro hubs very easily (it'll almost fall apart), you don't need to mess with the locking pins of 2nd and 3rd gear.

If the balls are in the bottom of the case, hopefully the springs are still in the synchro hubs.  If not, they're readily available (and probably worth changing to be honest) - there's 3 balls/springs in each synchro.

Cheers mate, hopefully the 3rd bearing and springs are still inside.

I'm right in saying its the hub on the far left that i lift off and it should have places for the bearings?

If you are keen you can refit the detent balls in place. But it's probably worth taking it apart now.

And yeah, it's usually the 3/4th gear syncro hub that the detents erupt from. I would be worried if they came out while the gearbox was in use. This points to the selector detent possibly not being installed (in the diff casing)

What's the trick to replacing the syncros - I'm struggling to get mine over the ball bearings?

It is do-able on your own, with your hands, I've done it. Very fiddly!

I love the simplicity and effectiveness of Moke's tool above though.
