I was hoping that someone may have fitted this before and be able to help me in regards to the alignment of the bootfloor and complete back panel

The problem area on here is where the lower bootlid meets the back panel.
My query is in regard to the 3 off 1/2" holes on the lower flange. I have been aligning the two panels using these holes as the datum,by dropping in 1/2 pins to accurately align the two panels to each other. Everything lines up nice with the rear quarters and rear cant rail, the window aperture is correct and most of the bootlid when fitted is great, apart from the area between the mounting area of the hinges on the boot lid, where the bootlid sits proud of the rear panel by around 1/4 inch. If I was to move the lower rear panel area by not using the hole as a datum, most of the error goes.
However in this equation, I must add that I have done a lot of work to my bootlid to repair it, and it's highly possible it is the wrong shape on the lower area of it which is where I repaired it.
I haven't got another bootlid available to compare the fit in the boot aperture, so I would like to know if some could confirm the 1/2" holes in the panels are in an accurate position, and provide the correct contours to match the bootlid.

Thanks

Hi.... I wouldn't go off the the holes.... Get it all lined up and tacked up and re drill the holes through...that's what I did anyway and all seems good .... Hope this helps

Yes that does help mate. It's just the fact that I've done a lot of work to my lid, and im unsure if that was causing the problem, and not the panels.
I was just kinda running on the idea that as they are both genuine panels and the holes I presume are pressed out at the same time, and they were used to line up on assembly. That is all constructed in my mind though through logic, however being bmc it could be utter tosh !

I never replaced the full boot floor only the back half with hinge panel and rear valance , I also tried lining the holes up but they where a good 20mm off which was throwing everything out which led to some head scratching and I came up with the idea of just tacking it all up and re drilling the holes, I know nothing had moved as I had it all braced up before I chopped it all out.... I don't think heritage panels are as good as they used to be and there jigs/moulds are probably all worn out by now

Cheers James

Thanks James. I think you may be right. When the two centre holes are lined up on mine, the top back panel sits about 5mm short of the edge of the flange of the boot floor. Everything points to it needing to come further out, except the centre hole. Both outer holes align perfectly, to set the rear quarters and bootfloor in position.
Thanks for your help James, I just didn't want to ignore the holes to discover later on that are quite important datum holes 😃

The holes are for fitting the bumper, not for alignment. And at 1/2" they are oversize to allow for a little slip, I've never seen a single original car or new shell with those holes properly aligned.
