And you'd have to pay to get another registration number, so take that into account. I bought a cheap JOB plate when I got my car because the real reg ended with FKR (which I just didn't like) . Only cost me £180 then but it's gone up in value quite a bit apparently because it's a low prefix and they've all gone now. I guess if the plate means nothing to you, sell it. But if it's worth something now, it will probably increase. Shop around and get the best offer.

The plan was buy a a cheapish number plate that means a bit to me (as this means nothing to me)
Sell the number plate for around 3/4 of what they valued it at
Resto my mini
Happy days

Have done this once with an ex company reg, they would list it on their site and if it sold, they would then give us a percentage of the sale - in the end we didnt bother, usually the high valuations are to entice you do commit to selling it through them and entering some sort of pre-sale-contract.

Ttransferred a number a few years ago with car out of MOT. They examined the car, it still ran and was taxed (free disc) and only the transfer fee was charged. I did not have to buy a new number. The car's was MOT was just under 18months old and if it had gone over the 18 months, the only way of transfer was to scrap the car.
I can't personally see that your Y reg is worth in the thousands. Unfortunately these plate brokers, like estate agents talk the item up to get the business and then just sit back wait and hope.

if you do want to sell it stick it on ebay, go for a couple of grand with a best offer on it and see what happens.
