Need some advice on what paint to use to paint the engine Block and cylinder head?. It had been overprinted with some blue , which has been completely removed. The original red paint is pretty well keyed on. There are some rusty areas but all sanding prep and all degreasing done. Also used upol panel wipe to finally clean.

Thanks
Andy

The last engine I painted was mostly bare metal with some areas where the original red paint was still stuck tight like you described.

I degreased the individual parts then panel wiped them and brushed painted both engines bellow and they looked brilliant. The green engine was probably left of a week before is was ran so the paint had plenty of time to harden off.

My local paint supplier does a 'Fast Engine Paint' in whatever colour you need? It's somewhere between Chassis Paint and Polyurathane.

Cheers guys, always helpful advice on the Mini forum. Will try the halfords stuff, but the frost paint would probably be a better product?.

Ive used the frost stuff before. Very good product. Very high in colour too so you only need one coat bit expensive mind you but you get what you pay for

I went to a local paint supplier and had some made up (pretty much any colour you want). Just make sure you ask for high temp. In terms of price it was on par with Halfords, but your getting proper bodyshop paint and should have wide spray nozzles. I had some beige etch primer and a lime green (can't remember the name atm). 1 can of each was enough for the block and head.

To clean my block I used a drill with wire brush, then sent it to a machine shop for a hot wash. Obviously if yours isn't in bits then that might be a bit tricky! lol

The engine doesn't really get hot enough to warrant a high temp paint. It's all down to the preparation and ensuring every bit of grease and oil is removed.

I've used Hammerite before with no problems, as I do on brake callipers.

For my engine build, I'm using Granville black engine paint. It's very well rated.

Thanks again fellas, actually picked up some red hammerite. The engine is all prepped and ready for painting. Will update the thread over the next few days.

Cheers

Andy

I just use normal paint. The engine block doesn't get that much hotter than the paint on the outside of a dark car on a real sunny day.

Use an etch primer first, and then anything you like.... I've even seen engines painted in Dulux.
