I've been asked by a friend to go and see a car that he is interested in buying as an investment. personnally I buy cars to play with...but each to their own.

Car is a....

1967 mk1 cooper.

1071 engine (can't verify this as it hasn't got an engine number and i'm not 100% sure) - it has got a lightened flywheel and a (his words) hot cam and doesn't tickover very well. head is 11 stud and doesn't have a flat manifold flange. running twin HS2's with steel filter box.

Brakes - 7.5" S discs but comes with the original 7" setup

Suspension - dry cones with standard setup (should it be hydro??)

Interior - nice and has been retrimmed at some point - has 120mph speedo.

Now the bad bits....

Has had a 'restoration' in 1988 which included a lot of panels and stuff that (in my eyes) hasn't been done right - over sills, repairs to floor put over original panels. Has had a new front end and new door skins and new rear 3/4's. Has twin tanks, but the right hand one looks like it has been welded together rather than made of pressed panels. Also missing the boot panel brackets on the floor - but has them on the bulkhead.

Paintwork is fair and straight (ish) but not concours by any means. Tartan red with black roof.

is running on reverse rims

Saved the best til last though............

the guy fitted a sunroof in the 70's and not a nice webasto one either....a flip up and lift out jobbie!!!!!!!!!!

NO MOT

Car comes with the original engine (havn't seen it though) and a box load of bits and some wheels.

I've got no photo's but have seen the car and it looks straight and ok but does have issues mentioned above. My friend is pushing for a price to offer the guy but i don't want to give him the wrong one.  The seller has had it valued by the british mini club at a certain price bu ti feel it is too much .

What do you think it's worth.....

cheers

I wouldn't even look at it as an investment as its going to take quite a bit of cash to put it all right by the sound of things. They are only worth serious money if they are all present and correct. As it stands its value would be around £6000-£7000 ooh yes should be on hydro. If he buys it and wants complete hydro set up get in touch as I have a set, frames, spheres pipes etc.

Fair enough.

what are they worth when mint and original?

Also, if he wanted to reskin the roof - are mk1 skins the same as later shapes?

If mint and original late mk1 cooper about £12000 concours up to £15000 is about right. Pre 65' cars a little more.

Regarding the roof I am not sure is the honest answer. I can't see why the actual skin would be any different though.

Something I missed is if the engine is a genuine 1071 and running then this could would be worth up to £3000 itself

Yeh i thought that too, but no engine number and couldn't I.D. it accurately.

Tappet chest covers, thin gearbox flange but couldn't see down the back of the block for any numbers.  did notice a fuel pump hole on the back of the block but i thought the 1071 didn't have this hole?
