All fixed thanks to the above methods of sucking and blowing and bleeding.

 

I did get a new slave from my motorfactors but its exactly the same as the current one with the loosely fitting bleed valve - going to return it and ask them to order a Lockheed one

The bleed nipples are always loose like that, on pretty much all cars not just minis.
I'd not worry about it if you've bled everything and it's working fine, the syringe thing was a good idea too!
