Hi,

My Names Alan, 26 from Surrey. New here only my second post and my second Mini purchase. I owned my first in 2005, It was a diamond white Rover City, had it for around a year, bit of a mistake selling it but it was a first car. Rot in the normal Mini places too.

Any way on to the current one. Its a Barn / Garage find, or what ever you want to call it. Its a 1980 Mini 1000 Auto. Covered just over 18,700 and was last on the road in 2002. Since then its spent just over 12years in a garage. Its very solid, next to no rust on it at all and all in pretty much original condition.

Been as its sat for so long the brakes have ceased. Here it is in my garage when i got it home

Some of the parts are looking rather tired after 34 odd years

Im chuffed with it. As Mini prices are on the up massively since i was last on the Mini scene i thought i would get in there before its out of reach money wise

I see from you info your very local to me. Would be good to know about meets/events etc

My first job was to wind the shoes off so i could roll it about. Brakes ceased solid. Next up, grill off for access, roll it in to day light and get a clean on so i can see what i got underneath over a decades worth of dust

Its not too bad at all. Wheel arches, engine bay and all gaps are thick with cobwebs as is the interior. Back into the garage, clean, bonnet off to start work.

Ive gone round the car and made a list of every thing needed to get it back on the road and have the first MOT in a long time

  • Drums, front and back
  • Shoes, again all round
  • Wheel cylinders, all round
  • Fan belt
  • Thermostat
  • Thermostat gasket
  • Radiator cap
  • Oil filter
  • Air filter
  • Wiper blades and stainless steel arms
  • Brake hoses, front and back
  • Drum retaining screws x8
  • Original style Pressed number plates
  • Aerial
  • All other service items. Oil, fluids etc

Right thats on order time to go over the car and see whats under the rest of the grime. Heres some before and afters, came up rather nice

This is just after a soapy wash, No polish, wax or any thing yet. Its not exactly bad for 34year old paint

Your about 10/15 mins away from me! Yes exactly that. Have a unmolested clean example by the end of it. Im loving it so far. Its a pleasure to work on. Everything undoes as it should and its so easy to work on. I own a 1994 Toyota Celica ST205 GT-four and thats a nightmare compared, bit of a difference going for near 400hp to 30 odd hp. Love it!

Had a proper good clean up in there and flushed it through the best i could for now. Be coming back to that. Rad's out and ive ordered up top and bottom hoses as well as a new water pump to freshen it all up

I may do in the future. 7.5" to retain the 10" wheels isnt it? Im yet to MOT it. You will see why shortly! I'm not hunting for power on this one. I have the GT-four for that, thats well on the back burner now the Mini has arrived. I think im done with chasing the horses. Theres a bit on it on my youtube channel. I'll have to upload a new one later, did Brands Hatch in the rain. A bit of a bum clincher!!!!
