I bought a J reg Min from a chap near Newcastle and drove it down to Brum where I live yesterday. I came via the A1 and M1 mainly and noticed that although the speedo was reading 65 to 70 mph the engine was revving like crazy and I was being passed by artics with a limited speed of 56 mph! The engine is a 1275 Metro SPI (whatever that is) and the wheels are 10 x 6 Superlites. Would it be worth my while put 12 inchers on or have I got to start thinking in terms of the diff? Any suggestions anyone?

Put 12 inch wheels on and try that, you may need to change the diff to alter the gearing

The rolling radius of the 10" wheels isnt much different to that of some 12" wheels so that won't have much of an effect. But I would try and get your speedo checked as it sounds like its completely wrong and is throwing your view off. Don't forget mini engines like to rev and the lack of sound deadening etc will mean its much louder than modern cars.

Changing the wheels will make virtually no difference as the rolling radius of 10", 12" & 13" wheels is virtually identical due to larger wheels having lower profile tyres.

It sounds as though you have the FDR from a Metro which will need changing for one more suitable for a Mini.

You also need to know what revs you are using by fitting a tachometer.

Excuse my chronic ignorance but what is a FDR please? I had already worked out that the wheel change wouldn`t make make a hell of a difference because of profiles as you said but I`m looking to make any difference as she seems to be screaming at what seems quite low road speed. Checked under the carpets last night and it already has sound deadening fitted though the bonnet is lacking any, I will soon remedy that! lol

FDR - Final Drive Ratio

Sounds like you need to think about taking the gearbox apart to change it.  Or live with your 'sportier' acceleration, depends how much commuting you'll be doing.

Fortunately the Min (must think of a name) is my plaything so i`m not actually relying on it for daily transport - I just have this  "thing" about things being right. I tried to kill that bloody fly this morning............................mutter mutter mutter  ;D
