LJK Setright goes back to Longbridge to find out what Sir Alec Issigonis is doing about steam. (Car Magazine - May 1971)

...and that was his gearless Mini. In 1974 an E-series engine coupled to a torque converter and an epicyclic forward and reverse gear.
We installed it firstly in a Clubman. It was unfortunately involved in an accident on its first road outing, a car pulled out in front of it.
The unit was then put into an Allegro for further appraisal.
The Steam car was further developed with a condensor incorporated into the floor pan. Even Alec knew that this was not going to be a possibility. The car was stored in one of the Tunnels for a while.
