I want to remove the paint and prime the shell myself so I'm not left with a hole in my pocket from blasting or dipping, is it best to use paint stripper or rub it down ? Or maybe a little of both ?

Personally I would sand rather than paint strip. Stripping sometimes isn't succesful with some paint types, it is messy and if not removed properly will react with your new paint. I'm not saying sanding is clean because it isn't, just work throught 1 panel at a time and protect it asap before it starts to rust
hope this helps

Personally i'd use both as you will struggle to sand paint from the gutter rails and little nooks and crannies.

For the majority I'd use strip and clean discs. I just paid 12 for 3 on the bay and it will take 5 or 6 to do the majority of the car. It only attacks paint, filler and loose rust.
