They work on a points basis to a maximum of 100, the safer you drive the points you get which earns you a refund and discount upon re-newel. If you accelerate a bit harsh or like cornering quickly you get feedback telling you this, if you keep driving the same you could get your insurance revoked. Drive sensibly for 12 months or so, get a years no claims and you'll get the rewards longterm. It worked for my son and he really wasnt keen on a box but is now glad he got one. I do feel sorry for young drivers now, insurance companies just print their own money. My first car cost me £60 to insure Third party only, but then that was 26 years ago!!!

My first car was a Citroen AX, I paid 200 quid for it and £555 to insure. that was in 2000.

Now my wife and I pay £435 on an admiral multi car policy for a 2009 Mazda 6 2.2 diesel and a 2012 Seat Ibiza diesel.

It's all about risk, young (especially male) drivers are a high risk therefore should pay more to insure their cars. These black boxes give them the opportunity to show how carefully they can drive and get rewarded for good driving

£600 cheaper by having a Black box....no brianer, my son had a black box fitted to his Corsa, now got a years no claims and passed his Advanced Test, the quotes to put him on the Mini as a named driver are £500, fully comp. 12 months ago it was £1500.
There no embarrassment in a Black box. Personally I think every new driver should have a black box for at least 2 years as I've seen too many teenagers wrapped around tree's.

I am thinking about it. I guess the only thing I could get caught on is the acceleration and cornering. Where are the limits for 'safe driving'? I don't speed anyway, so that doesn't worry me.

If you drive with that attitude straight after passing your test you'll be wrapped around a tree within a month.

Try not to hurt anyone else in your impending crash

I'm not sure what you are referring to..?

If you're accelerating and cornering to the point that you're concerned about the black box straight after your test it's going to end in tears

Well I don't know what the insurance would class as dangerous acceleration or cornering. That's why I would be concerned.

Coop black box isn't that strict... My mate has it and corners like a bafoon

It stays in the mid range which means his policy stays the same price at the review intervals

With coop though the car has to be no older than 1998

Hopefully well before there is any risk to other road users.

My driving instructor told me you learn to drive when you pass your test. Of course I completely ignored him and I expect you will completely ignore me. But one day, probably in 10 or so years time you'll realise I'm right. Also, remember you're never totally in control

Not sure how the insurance set their limits but the box has like a G-Force sensor that links through GPS to the insurance Data base, you get feedback every month. The insurance are after consistency in driving this is how they see how good or bad a driver you are. I know we have gone slightly off thread so my recommendation to the original post is save £600, drive safely and get more experience.

. I know we have gone slightly off thread

That's my fault.

But it concerns me that someone with no driving experience is concerned with how fast they can accelerate and corner before setting off the warning system on the black box

Id say anything that would fail your test, so harsh acceleration and braking, hard cornering measured by the geforces.

Take the advice above, if the black box is cheapest, then do it but drive sensible, get some experience and enjoy the benefits down the line when you have x years NCB and can insure any car you like easily and cheaply.

Nobody I've driven with has ever raised any concern to my driving style and I don't drive particularly aggressively.

From Ingenie..

Using the black box, we build up a picture of your driving style – including your speed, acceleration, braking and cornering. We review the price of your insurance 3 times a year based on how you’ve been driving over the previous 3 months – drive well and pay less.

But your learning, you have an adult with you.

When you get out there on your own, mates egging you on, driving new places you dont have experience of, its easy to get caught out and trust me you will, we all have, but the outcome depends on your driving, experience, road conditions etc. Some are lucky....maybe kerbing a wheel.....others not so lucky, rolling a car and writing it off....

Thats why insurance is cheaper as a learner, pass your test and it doubles or more.

I have put a post on how to gain a big discount on your Advanced Driving Test with the Institute of Advanced Motorists in Non Mini General Chat thread. If you live in Staffordshire have a look.

I think black box is the way to go, to be honest. I'll get some more quotes tomorrow for non-black box but I really need to save as much as I can.

Well I've just had a quote from Ingenie, the black box specialists, for £1400 plus a £650 excess.

The best quote I can get is £980 with a black box with £250 excess, fully comp. I don't think that is too bad.

Below is a screenshot of the quotes I got, showing the difference a black box makes.

Does anyone have any experience with 'Drive Smart'?

What if you add a bit of voluntary excess?
