So what did they do that made the engine and bit better for us?

In that lets say I was going to start fresh on a new motor what might I not know?

One thing I am already thinking is to loose the dizzy but. Then we could do that years ago I just never did.

Or is it all much the same?

First decide what you are going to do with the car when you've finished it, and that'll determine what you should do with the engine...

ie, there's no point having an all singing and dancing high performance engine if all you're going to do is go to the shops and back in it...

likewise, if you want to do track days or take it round the 'ring there there's no point building something which is only good for going to the shops and back.

Choose 2 of the following 3 things...

Cheap

Performance

Reliability

Well, if you go to the extreme of a miglia or Mini Se7en engine, spend about 20k on replacing everything but the block, head and gearbox castings.

Forged cranks, H rods, high spec pistons, timing belts, lightweight clutches, 7/8 port heads, dog boxes, ATBs LSD 's etc etc, throttle body injection, mappable ignition, turbo/supercharge

It all depends upon your budget

Unfortunately, answering a question which is as vague as the one you have asked is very difficult...

Essentially the A+ engine which was used in the last of those produced is almost identical to the one which was first produced in the early 50's

There are very few changes/differences to the actual A(+) series engine throughout the years of production.. mostly done for strength as the horsepower of the engine raised from 20-30 for the original 800's and 950's to the 1275 turbo which ran 90hp from the factory...

There were minor modifications, with the introduction of the MPi with the filter moving to the block ( but this had already been done many years before with the Maestro/Montego installation of the A+ engine )

So I fail to grasp what your question is...

What can you do to an A series today.... sh*t loads

as I said, Turbo, Supercharger, 16v heads, BMW K RS1200 heads, Dry decking  really anything you can dream, vs anything you can afford.

You don't even have to stick with the A(+) engine, put an Yamaha R1 engine in the front, or a couple of Hyabusa Turbo's in the back...

Doesn't to me - all I can see is a black Mini. Could be a race, rallycross, rally or even an autograss car...!!

PS the MPi did not use a dizzy either, or mechanical petrol pump, so no holes for these in the block either...

If you want to build a good engine start with a mid 80's A+ engine, best metal.
