Hi all

where do people get there welding gas from and how long does it usually last?

I have been using a gasless but that's now broken so im going to go over to using gas as I prefer them anyway and they weld better in my opinion.

Thanks David

Try hobbyweld or Adams. You can find your local stockist on their websites

How long do you get out of a hobby weld bottle? My local stockist is only 0.5 miles away so would be ideal

I use hobby weld but I don't think the bottle will last long due to 137 bar fill. The boc volkszone deal is about best value if you are doing a fair amount of welding.

The hobbyweld bottle works by you going in and and paying a deposit on the bottle. IRIC, it's £50. you sign a contract which then means you keep the bottle as long as you like. When it is empty, you return it and pay a refill charge which is 30 odd quid and they give you another bottle.

Once you are done and don't need any more gas, you return the final bottle and they give you back the £50 deposit.

My local stockist has a regulator in store to check fill pressure before i take the bottle as i once had a problem where the bottle was under filled, so i would say take your own regulator and connect it and check just to make sure, if they don't have their own.

Hi Bluemini1979,

How long it would last all depends on what your flowrate is set to and how big you make your fillet leg. We have performed a few calculations on our new website, not sure if i'm allowed to post the address of the page so here is the extract;

Average continuous welding time

On average the Hobbyweld Original cylinder provides around 2 hours 27 minutes of continuous welding. For a better indication of how much effective time that actually is, if you were to set your flowrate to 8 litres per minute this would provide a little over 2.5 hours of continuous welding, if you then take an average hand travel speed of 126mm per minute (similar to the speed you would weld car bodywork) you would theoretically be able to weld the length of over 5 x 1950's Morris Minors.

Morris-Preview.jpg

  • Based on 3.2mm Material (1/8") using 1.0mm wire @ 140IPM wire feed speed - 31.8 cfh gas flow, estimated welding time of 2 hours 30 minutes with a fillet leg size of 6mm. 1948 - 1971 Morris Minor Length of 3,759mm (148 inches)

For people who have a high gas usage we have introduced a new cylinder to our lineup named the 'Hobbyweld Ultra' - though we'd only recommend this route if you use more than 5 x 20 litre cylinders per year (a BOC size Y = 20 litre)

Hope the average welding time extract helps :)

Regards, John

p.s. We'll be posting a story of a Mini restoration on our blog next month - our newsletter will let you know when it's up... if you're interested.
