I've just converted my headlamps from sealed beam to H4 bulbs on my 1994 rover mini, and wow didn't realise how much difference it would actually make. Took around an hour and a half of fiddling about but in the end got them working and the beam set correctly. Not bad for a couple if hours work. If you are looking to upgrade to H4 conversion it's really easy doesn't cost much and makes a big difference. I thought I'd share this with you guys! :)

Yep I did it on mine, when I had sealed beams they were so bad I had to drive with full beam on and yet still didn't get flashed once!!! I did have my hand ready to dip them if someone did though.

Because I was a bit worried about my 38 year old wiring I went for H4 35W bulbs which made one helluva difference over the candle-power sealed beams.  I'll be getting a custom relayed loom and going up to 55W though.

I've got all the bits and bobs ready to get this conversion done once I get back from holiday. The sealed beams weren't upto much when I was driving down an unlit road to a friends last weekend!

You want lights! Who turned the darkness off? ;D .

Here are some: Hella H4 headlights with 110/80 bulbs and a pair of Cibie Super-Oscars with 100w halogen bulbs.

Will an '88 mini's loom cope with a straight swap to 55w halogen bulbs?

It should do if its in good condition. However its always a good idea to use relays. Mine currently just run of the standard wiring but the loom is only a year old and I do plan to fit a relay system in the near future.

Splintercat I got the KC 7"lights from the bay of E and the projectors come from theretrofitsource.com in the US. There is a fair bit of dremel work and trial and error but they work out good in the end.

Cheers

Mark

Thanks for that gonna have to look into this a lot deeper than I thought. I see that everyone and their dog is doing this in the motorcycle world and was tempted just to buy 2 of the 7" headlamps advertised on the various bike websites but that kinda takes the fun out of it though......So no doubt in the near future Ill be in contact again bud thanks........

Will no doubt be trying to contact Scrumpix too for the fun of it......Winter project lol
