Anyone else think this is a great little engine?

I bought a 1098 a while ago and I'm using it in my GT while I upgrade the 1275.

I'm amazed at how good this engine is - its quiet, smooth, revs freely (not pushed it past 6000 mind you) makes a great sound and has bags of torque where you need it. People have even commented on how good it sounds.

OK, it won't give you the same power as the big bore engines but I'm just finding it so nice to drive that I'm thinking of developing it a little - nothing mental, maybe just a 295 head.

Enjoying it so much, I'm in no rush to get the 1275 back!

could not agree more, my last A series was a 1098, 12G295 and a mild cam from piper - got a decent BHP figure and great reliability too.

David Vizzard used one as a race engine to good success against the big bore stuff back in the day - it was his comments that put me on to this often overlooked option.

Yes totally agree,

Nice torquey little engine, it used to pull my clubby estate along without any problems! Keep below 6000rpm and you'll be fine!

A nice alternative to tuned 1000's or 1275's and getting a bit rarer now too!!

Cheers, Steve.

If people ask me to build a 998 road engine, the first thing I say is 'Have you got 1098 cranks to make it a proper engine!?!'

I'm pleased about this, Ive just bought a barn find clubman estate and discovered it's a 1100 clubman ;-) I won't be in a rush to change to a 1275 now either

I've got a 1098 engine in the build. It's getting a 12G295 and some flat top pistons...

Glad there's a few folk that agree about the 1098. Its a great option if you want a bit more performance than a 998 but don't want to pay the crazy money for a good 1275. Mine is standard apart from a free-flow exhaust and K&N running with an HS4 and AAU needle. With a ported 295 head it should be sweet.

Yeah love my 1098 it really goes well with a simple stage 1 kit!  its bullet proof. never been apart in 35+years...

keeps up with the wife's standard 1275. Kinda been waiting for it to break for 5 years so i'd have to fit the 12g940 and cam setup on my old 998... but life is full of distractions!

I had a 1098 in my first clubby. With a stage one kit and a good tune it kept up my mates 1275GT 99% of the time. Only difference seemed to be above 70mph which isn't a major problem in real world driving most of the time.

Good in my opinion. Considering that a stroked 998 is a 1098...You can get the regular dished Pistons at most mini shops like Minispares.

Graham Russell in Australia has made up some great flat top 1098 pistons in plenty of overbore sizes

They are sold by Keith Calver in the UK too

To stroke the 998 to 1098 you need the gudgeon pins in a different position, normal overbore 998 pistons will sit almost flush to the block deck, overstroke them and they'll protude out the block saying hello engine builder

Russells might be the right ones, shame hes just in the opposite part of aus to where my brother lives

Yep, that's why he sells the 1098 specific pistons to suit the long crank...

The 1098 engine was available for years in Aussie made minis

Lovely engine for a road Mini with lots of low and mid-range torque.

I had an MG1100 engine in an 850 many years ago. It did lots of miles an was very reliable. I did take care not to rev it over 6000 rpm.
