Hi, looking to get some proper ICE in the mini. I've been having a good look and I've settled on:

Sub - http://www.jlaudio.c...r-drivers-92148

Amp - http://www.jlaudio.c...mplifiers-99398

I want a top quality, but subtle install, so I'm happy to get the above. Now what about speakers?...

At the mo all I have is 2x 5.25" edge speakers, so any recommendations that will work well with the sub/amp I've chosen?

I don't understand the RMS, impedance etc...

Cheers

Could I just keep the two 5" edge speakers with the JL sub/amp, or shall I add 6x9s too, or just 6x9s and do away with the 5" ones?

Edit: I want to keep it all JL. If I get these too - http://caraudiosecur...ponent-speakers

Would I need a seperate amp for them, or can they be run off the amp above with the sub?

Cheers

Hay

Have you had a read of the car audio 101?

It a good place to start before you cormmit to purchase kit.

The basic layout and postion are the MOST important part of an install.

One thing I will add if you really want "top quality" you going to need to spend way more than the kit you have listed so far... :)

Also, that amp is purely for driving a sub, it won't drive a pair of normal speakers aswell. For that you either need a 4 channel amp (to power the sub and a pair of normal speakers) or that amp (for the sub) and a seperate 2 channel amp (for an extra pair of speakers.

Another way is to power the sub from that amp, then any other speakers off your headunit (if you have one)

Cam.

thanks Cam, just that little bit of info has helped loads. So I'll go for the JL 500 amp then as that's a 4 channel.

Hi ruckus, max is £500, but that's for amp/sub and component speakers. I want all JL gear

No problem, I'll let Ruckus take over here as he will no doubt get you set up and go over the details of how to wire the sub and speakers etc..

Good luck with your install mate!

Will shop around, but these are the ones I'll go for. Decided to get 10" sub instead of 8"

Hurry up pay day! :D can't wait to have some decent sound instead of tin noise from the tiny edge speakers currently got :P

Looks good.. where are you mounting/positioning all this?

If you have the sub in the boot you can't have the components in the rear shelf (unless you box them in).. I don't think you can anyway

Sounds good. Will be interested in pictures of your setup as I'll be doing pretty much the same thing and I'm after inspiration :-)

Yeah cool. I've already ordered the sub now, but can't order the others for a few days :)

Have a look through the build threads aswell as what Ruckus told you to read. You will see all the high end systems have the speakers up front

simplest solution for a mini is:

4 channel amp (say 4 * 100W)

2 channels for the front speakers

bridge the remaining 2 channels for the sub

A small sub (8 - 10") in a sealed box in the boot

split/component speakers up the front

the tweeters - I've had best success in compact installs aiming the tweeter at the opposite side passenger, so drivers side tweeter point towards passenger, and vice versa. High frequencies are very directional so this helps with staging (centralising the audio).

You don't really need to worry about impedence. All car speakers are 4 ohm. If you get a sub which has two voice coils, they will hopefully be 4 ohm each. then you can run each voice coil in parallel which gives a 2 ohm load. if you do this make sure your amp specs state it is stable at 2 ohms.

RMS - think of this (but don't) as the 'average' power. Cheap equipment usually states max power, because bigger numbers = better sales. Ignore these, RMS is all you need to know.

Your front components will want to be around 70WRMS.
