i use super unleaded in my 1983 998cc standard city e.

daft you may think?

not so really,  when you think that the engine was designed to run on 4 star leaded petrol,  which i believe had a octane rating of 97, then running on normal unleaded with a 95 octane rating would mean below standard performance,

ok it probs not a big amount of difference.

i was driving when leaded fuel was fazed out and can remember all the talk and concerns about it, what cars needed modding and how - some needing just ignition timing adjusting, others needed the valves seats doing aswell.

i do wonder how many people forget this when having running problems as a lot of ignition timing info about will be for running leaded ie 97 ron fuel?

somthing worth thinking about

my mini does seem happier running super unleaded and the cost differance isnt  that much really, certainly not worth quibbling about.

when i passed my test petrol was roughly 55p a litre now thats a big differance lol

Exactly this! Super unleaded is much better for leaded valve seats, although I can't remember why. Especially if you are running a more high performance leaded engine, such as the MG Metro engine.

If i remember, you could also get 5 star petrol aswell but, i would,nt know what octane rating it was.

When I passed my test 5-star was 25p per GALLON, but I only earned about £7 per week as an apprentice.

I wish they still did 5-star!  I also wish it was still 25p a Gallon!

I run an after sales dept for a car main dealer and we have so many problems with supermarket fuel at 95ron. I would always use super unleaded if your filling at a supermarket. If you go to a smaller fuel station normal unleaded should be fine.
Supermarket fuel can sit in the tank for a long time and the quality deteriorates.
I run my mini on super anyway. I just like to think I'm looking after it a bit better.

The only reason supermarket SU deteriorates is that it uses methanol to up the RON.

For those using V power, i can see the reasons, mainly as it holds cleaning properties for fuelling systems however the extra RON will only make a difference to those that are suffering with det or pinking. Those running standard engines will see no difference to performance, especially those running SPI/MPI engines as they do not have knock sensors in the system and therefore cannot change the ignition timing to benefit.
