Welding is not about how neat it is mate.

You need good penetration for a strong and successful weld.

Without being too critical, it looks as though alot of your weld is sitting on top of the join. You should be looking for it to melt the two sides of the join together.

What settings are you using on your welder?

Little too cold and too fast on that weld buddy.

Best to grind it clean and try again.

No shame for a first attempt though...

Have a look here www.mig-welding.co.uk
There is a tutorial and also pictures comparing good and bad welds.

Take you time and practice, as noted above there isn't enough penetration for a good weld in your pics.
You need to turn it up a bit on power and probably down in wire speed.

Good Luck!

Also make sure the wire isn't chaffing as that can cause welds to go like that

Thanks to all above, like I said, needed a little guidance on it, but its better now than before. My first weld was a little crude, but with more "Penetration" (Hehehehehe) :P I am getting better :) Practise makes perfect!

So the next task..... and question.... How do I strengthen up aluminium wings when they are crudely built in 3 sections? I'm thinking of covering them in 2mm steel sheet to get the right shape, and so I can then weld the edges to box section on the new wing frame. I don't want to start from scratch as well, They would look even worse!
The steel would be riveted onto the aluminium, mainly to strengthen the 3 sections of the wing already there, then undersealed where necessary and then painted. Does that sound realistic?
Cheers!! :P

How are things going ? I just spotted you asked about the small side windows and came back on here to have a look at the Nomad. Not sure what you could do to them really. On my Scamp I am going to tilt the screen back a bit, possibly more than in the photoshopped picture I did. This will leave just a small corner where a window could be and I was going to fit a mirror.

Not sure what would look good on yours. Could the doors be made longer and slightly taller ? This would make the window area shallower and you could just have one piece of glass and do away with the little one at the front. Alternatively could you move the screen back a bit. It would be a hell of a lot of work though.

Just has a quick go to show you what I mean, trouble is I have made it look a bit more like a Scamp but overall it's a bit more LandRover. I made the wheels a bit bigger as well !
