Thought i would start a thread on my latest project, Repairing / re shelling my mighty mini racecar

This season started quite well, missed silverstone due to not finishing the car in time but managed to get out for the next round at the brands hatch mini festival with a nice new paintjob to promote my business

Next round was at oulton park where unfortunately, this happened...

Locked the brakes going into one of the chicanes which pitched me slightly sideways, had to come off the brakes to settle the car back down but that meant going into the corner too quickly (there is an escape road to straight line the chicane but by the time i had thought about it i had already commited to the turn) had it not been for a stack of tyres at the edge of the track I would have been fine, but unfortunately the car rode up over them and threw me over, first roll wasnt too bad but when it came back down on its wheels it bounced back up in the air (pause the video, its 4 wheels off the ground at one point!) and came down, Hard, on the drivers side, which resulted in a red flagged race, a trip to the medical centre and more importantly, this!

Which doesnt look tooooo bad, from a distance!

Unfortunately getting up close reveals a bit more

You can see where the bulkhead has moved over towards the passenger side (Look at the gap between the cage and the door post) and also the damage to the crossmember (there is no sill damage so the only way that could have happened is by the shell twisting) also when looking down the drivers side of the car, it looks like a very shallow z shape so im thinking the current shell may be past it, although im yet to measure it up and strip it down so it may be saveable yet, but im reckoning on a reshell

Target is for late january to join up with some other mighty mini racers at donnington for a pre season trackday test / shakedown, but knowing me i will  be finishing it in the paddock at the first round, watch this space!

After posting this yesterday I have decided on the re-shell route, Dragged this from the back of the unit and made a start today,

was supposed to have been restored to sell as a road car but its missing a few bits and it needs less work and fewer panels than the shell i had got lined up, plus selling some of the bits i dont need will help pay for it all!

Few crusty bits to deal with, needs the usual, front end, sills / steps, rear quarters, boot floor repair etc

Was purchased as a failed project from someone who had taken it somewhere to have the bodywork done and they had ended up having to go and get it back with as many of the parts of it they could find, while it had been with this "restorer" he has stripped part of the engine down (he was not asked to do any mechanical work) lambda sensor was removed and missing, rockers removed & missing, switches missing, front doorcards missing lus some other odds and sods, god knows what he was up to! also judging by the way he has ground back the rust i think it would have been a filler special, the one panel he did manage to fit (passenger a panel) he has managed to make a right hash of -

Good restorer hey?!

Have spent today stripping it in readiness for panelwork and it currently stands like this

cheers, yeah its not too bad, usual suspects really! the other shell i was planning to use has rotted in some weird places, all repairable but this one will be quicker to do

all the safety gear did its job, i walked away with a couple of bruised ribs from the side of the seat

was back in july so im fine now! just need to find a tighter fitting seat this time (not that im planning on doing it again!)

This one should be better hopefully, I rushed a couple of things towards the end when building the old one and i was never happy with the finish in places, got a few ideas for mild changes on the colour scheme  but thats about it

apologies for the lack of progress, been busy with customer work, have managed to get some bits and bobs done though

Took advantage of the cold weather to remove the sound deadening

DSCN2325_zps49436023.jpg

DSCN2324_zpsd711da40.jpg

Rear bins and seat overhang removed

dscn2406_zps4ea480ce.jpg

also managed to strip the old shell and get rid, was taking up room and i was sick of looking at it! measured it up when stripped and replacing it was the right thing to do, it was miles off

DSCN2399_zpse5f2f50b.jpg

Still, it brightened up the scrapyard!

DSCN2402_zps64343a85.jpg

removed the scuttle panel as it was new when i built the car - and im tight! and also saved the rear panel as the new shell needs one, these were about the only 2 undamaged panels on the car!

More to come on this shortly but for now, have a pic of (nearly) all the welding work complete, considering the shell turned out to have a lot more rot than at first thought and ive been doing it in 2 - 3 hour bursts after work I dont think ive done bad in the time ive spent, I wont upload the in progress photos as to be honest there are enough threads on here of minis being welded up and secondly Ive been that concerned with trying to get it finished ive been forgetting to take any! I promise i will take photos of the more interesting stuff from now on in!
