Update on the re-skinning, managed both doors now and started on the rear ones.

Made sure the inside was rust free and nice coat of paint on and weld through on the bits where I'll be welding, also made sure drainage holes at bottom, I did them in middle of the weld as weld is slightly raised so water can flow either side.

Clamped it down, tapped it round with hammer and dolly, also put a bolt through the handle screw hole to hold in place, but didn't do any welding till had chance to offer up, one door I used sealant around the inside edge before putting skin on apart from where welding, but this was little stressfull trying to make sure the door was in shape before welding it in the little time I had.  I only welded a few places around the door lip, you can see a couple of V's I cut out that way could weld but grind down and not even tell there's weld there, but of course had to weld it up top where it fitted to window frame.

Time for new door hinge plates, 2.2mm thick stainless, that was hard on the drill bit!

The rear doors, cut off bottom skin section, not too bad inside after bit of cleaning up, just the lower part gone as per norm.

and the other side

32966405130_edf1dc0dd9_z.jpg

Fitting this side isn't simple fold lip around, I managed to joggle the edge so easier to align and won't see when finished, I had to use a roller step joggler standard joggler wouldn't fit in.

Just got to repair the lower sections and then the skin should fit nicely(hopefully!).

Little update on my rear doorskins

Used the new skin as guide to the bottom repair, as there wasn't much left of it, just clamped it on as you can see below and welded the lower repair on, did this side first so could match up with the other door so I can see both got same shape.

Then after cleaning up doesn't look that bad, some drainage holes but don't know how well they'll work with the rubber seal close, but better than nothing.

Well been a while since had chance to work on car, but quick update on my rear doors, got one skin on and working on the other.

Just need to clean up the weld.

Plug welded from back on the window edge again needs cleaning up.

Now for other door, the bottom corner had gone so little reconstruction here.

Then this is as far as I got for this week.

Just about finished the rear doors bit more cleaning up of the welds and done.

Here's the lower corner that had gone, now rebuilt.

33500005703_3f9f869aa4_z.jpg

Before putting the new skin on I put some sealant along the edge, but not on the side where it will be welded, on oposite door this was done all the way around.

34152296972_8bfb0a081f_z.jpg

Then clamped the new skin down, for the flat edge the easiest way I could think of to get best finish and to hold in place tighly, was joggled edge with skin pins to hold it down.

33925654380_23367a9fc7_z.jpg

Then after taking skin pins out cleaned up welds, doesn't look that bad.

Another week gone by so quick, managed to finish cleaning the weld on the rear doors, then started on the bonnet.

The joining corners are the main bits of weld you see, so these need to be finished of well, didn't do that bad, very light skim of filler and won't see a thing.

33614209654_c447fb8a6f_z.jpg

Now to make a start on the bonnet, as you can see it is the front that has got the most rot.

34325648821_153937ccb9_z.jpg

But cut it out and welded new part in, used two L strips of metal and welded in the middle. Suprisingly easy repair, but might need bit of filler to get the shape better.

34414773326_25ee7694c2_z.jpg

Finally started to clean the rear, rust in the corners and surface rust over most of the back, will treat it and paint it, but this is as far as I got for this week.

Put some suspension parts on so I could pop the wheels on and lower it down, this is so I could start on the roof, it was nice to put stuff on instead of keep taking stuff off! Then bit of paint stripper on the roof to remove the paint the easy part, cleaning up the guttering is such a pain, but managed to clean it up and remove the rust as that is where the main rust is on the roof in the guttering.

School holidays again last week so nothing done then but managed to get back to working on it this week, the roof cleaned and painted, in high build primer. Good to see some paint on it even if just high build.

As you can see there is paint in the guttering before painting, I put a good quality epoxy primer in the guttering hopefully that should keep it nice and water tight in there.

Front end body work, getting rid of any rust, even had a little rust spot on the new wing, bit of filler in places to straighen up things(mainly on the scuttle panel), and finish off with high build primer now onto the next section.

Managed a bit more bodywork this week, just about finished the worst side on the car.

It started like this, not the greatest looking repair but rust free and solid.

35292120930_b976d70296_z.jpg

Then stripped it and painted it, I know bodyfiller is supposed to be on bare metal, but the other theory is using an 2 pack epoxy paint to seal the metal then put filler on.

35639851776_f3972195b5_z.jpg

Then the filler, just about done so hopefully get it in high build this coming week.

You're making some really good progress on your estate. Are you going to keep it the same yellow colour or go for something else?

Cheers, not as fast as I'd like but don't get that much time on it per week, yes it is staying the same yellow, which can either be seen as lack of imagination or a good thing to keep things original, and it is probably mixture of both for keeping this colour, couldn't think of any other colour and thought it would nice to keep original colour.

Got one side in primer, had a bit of red paint spare so used as guide coat, for when I eventually get around to flatting all the high build down!

35866127916_88ea3c2e18_z.jpg

I also managed to get the front hub built up, I decided to go with 7.5" discs so can use 10" wheels, never used this size disc before, front drums are good but shoes get hot too easily and can't use the tapper bearings in the hubs, so bearings and shoes need changing more often also need adjusting more often, plus saves me sorting out the backing plate on the drums, gone with the cheaper calipers if 7.5" are good then if needed will upgrade later, but looks new stuff always looks nice.
