I'm sure this might have been debated before, but the recent thread on how many of us have killed Mini's in the past got me thinking.

Back then when they were plenty and you could pick them up for a couple of hundred quid, nothing was thought of cutting them up or sending them for spares and the scrappy. People didn't think ahead to when they would become scarce and valuable. They were the mass production car of the day.

Will that even happen again with modern cars, will 1990 Corsa Mk1 noddy car owner ever regret the day they traded it in for a Nissan Quashqai with room for the kids in back, are we counting down to last last Ford Ka (notorious for rust allegedly), will anyone EVER look back fondly on the Audi A3?

Is it just that times move on and the cars of our past become our nostalgia and at some point start to become valuable again OR are there really no "mass production" future classics in this modern world?

So, my starter for 10 and although I have never owned any, would be the Peugeot's of the late 90's, 106 Rallye and the 205 as possibles. What others would you put on that list...

There are so many thing wrong with the Lancia Delta Intergrale that make it right....although possibly doesn't quite a fall into the category of a mass production car....

Nissan Micra K11.

They are very similar to mini's in the sense of there are so many and are disposable.

Its hard to call IMO.

Much of the time cars become classics based purely on an image, for instance the Mini is an iconic image of the 1960's. Even a negative image in the publics mind can turn a car into a classic. Think about Austin Allegro's or Morris Marina's, in the publics mind they are considered to be an iconic image of why British Leyland failed, yet they have become classics for that.

One I will say is the CityRover. I remember reading about how over 60% of all ones made are still on the road.

Ok so none of mine are mass production cars.....just shows i've got class (or expensive tastes!)

As for mass produced - VW Corrado or Scirroco,  Honda CRX, and I like oldschool Toyota Celica's too.

106 GTI or Rallye for definite. Even now it's hard to find good, standard ones. A tidy, low-mileage one can only go up in value.

Same goes for a corsage B GSI. Good little cars, hated by most. But standard ones are rare. Mint ones very rare.

Probably early Clio 172 Cup. Lock them away, keep them standard. One hell of a little car.

Some of the dafter VW models too. Golf MK3 VR6 aren't massively dear, but they have a following already. Same for the Corrado.

E36 M3 too. One to watch! ;)

BUT...My old mk2 Scirocco. I paid 500 quid in 2008. Sold it in 2011 for 300 quid. Gutted from guttsville about it. Totally standard. Mint body. Definitely one to lock away and watch it appreciate.

my caveat is, whether rolling tax exemption continues. IF it does, anything of an age close to that bracket is worth considering.

The nova sr gte and Gsi are already there
The xr31 and xr2 have shot up in value
Any hot hatch from the 80 s and early 1990s have shot up in value.
I'd agree with the 106 rally. And the 205 has a Hugh following but the prices of them isn't so high as there are so many around prob as they didn't rot like most others and there engines we're strong. Not that I like the 205.
I'd say these are the cars that are the next pricy classics.

But if I look around and I've spoken to lots of people about this, I cannot see what modern day cars will be classics. There are some great cars out there now but in 10-15 years when there worthless and they get a problem there not the kinda car just any tom dick or Harry can fix so they will be off to the scrappy

Most cars debated are those "80s 90s hot hatches" Maybe the mass produced cars of today will at some point become a classic. Dare I say MINi, fiesta, saxo corsa etc

Yup. They're a surefire investment if you can find low mileage. Hell of a chassis, great engine, no wonder so many are being used on the track.
