changing the old merc for a small 4x4 this coming Friday. Done a nice deal with a small local used car dealer.

I need to tax and insure the new car from Friday approx 4.00pm

Here's the catch...

I can't tax the car as it isn't insured and won't be until 4.00pm Friday

I can't insure the car before then as I need to drive the Merc to the garage

So I will have the merc uninsured or the 4x4 untaxed

The dealer is very small and I don't think he can tax the 4x4 on my behalf

Anyone with similar experience recently??

cheers

Your insurer should allow you a small overlap without any additional costs, typically a day. This will enable you to register insurance on both vehicles and get the tax put on the new vehicle. You'll need the reference number from the V5C/2 to tax the new vehicle in your name. Did this recently myself with my insurer: Aviva.

Hope that helps!

I have been wondering about this as I am going with my mate to get his new project. The car is in Leighton bBuzzard so quite a distance. And is taxed at the moment, but won't be as soon as it's sold. I think the computer will take a time to,update so it will fine driving back.

I suppose they are expecting you to tax it using your phone, but I don't trust the security so never do any online shopping or banking on my phone.

Why can't you just tax the 4x4 over the phone when you pick it up?

Either of the above options but also can you not give the tax money to the dealer and then get them to tax the 4x4 or will that tax then become void under the new regulations?

as I understand it the dealer can't tax it for you anymore, but if the car is insured by you and they have the required number then I can't see why they wouldn't be able to.

Dealers can still tax cars on behalf of the customer, that hasn't changed.

Dealers can only tax a car which is registered in their name, if it is not registered then they will loose any tax redemption when the vehicle is sold..

Anyone can tax a car with a new keepers slip, at the post office, telephone or online, as long as the vehicle is insured and has an MOT if necessary. However it is the responsibility of the 'new keeper' to make sure this is done, not the dealer, or seller of a vehicle...

This is why I now have trade plates, removes any confusion.

This is what you can do:

Get the insurance certificate during that day, timed from 16-00 hours or earlier. It may have to start from midnight on that morning.

Get the V5C from the dealer and go with it to a post office with the ins. cert.

Tax the vehicle at the post office where you will receive a receipt.

You are then taxed & insured.

You don't even need the insurance certificate or MOT ( it's all computerised so will be on the system )  but it MUST be the new keepers part of the V5C, this has a different reference number to the main part of the V5C, so goes on the system as the new keeper taxing the car, if you tax it with the reference on the Main part, as soon as the DVLA transfer the ownership the tax you paid is null and void, and will be returned to the previous registered keeper.

I have just changed cars and spoke to my insurance company as i was in the same situation as you and I was told that both cars would be insured on the same day for 24 hrs to allow for the change over .. At no extra cost as this was standard procedure .
I taxed the new car over the Internet with the 12 digit doc ref no on the new keeper supplement . Or you can do the same thing at the post office .

The old system had worked perfectly for years. Why do these idiots have to mess it up? (Yes I know it's to make even more money from us).

With any luck, this is the prequel to doing away with the VED all together, and just dump the cost on the price of a litre of fuel.....

I did the calculations a while ago based on the revenue which is gained from fuel vs the revenue which is gained from VED... will add about 14.5p to a litre.

And only do around 5k miles a year with 3cars and a scooter
