I am going through the process of converting my R reg MPI to a centre speedo setup but I still want to retain a head unit somewhere in the car, although out of sight. I have a JVC head unit complete with remote control so I have the option of adding a IR repeater to enable the head unit to be hidden. I really do not like the under dash mounts and I won't really have room as I have relocated the relays and alarm ecu there. So far my ideas are;

1. Under rear seat in a custom panel

2. In boot - I have a boot liner so I could mount it in the side of the boot above rear wheel arch

Another idea is to ditch the head unit altogether and just go wireless with bluetooth and an amp.

Any suggestions?

Luke.

If you want a project then mount the main unit under the driver seat but with the face in the drivers sun visor... A bit or work but damn cool when done...

Just flip it up and it's out of sight. :)

Wow never thought of anything like that. Have you seen this done somewhere?

Ruckus you are a genius.

I have googled this and it would be relatively easy to do by using some cat5 cable of which I have boxes of the stuff (work in IT) to make a ribbon cable linking facia to main unit.

I will experiment with facia position. Possibly sun visor or possibly some sort of flip-out from under the lower dash rail.

I've did similar years ago with a blaupunkt New York headunit.

The 'Core' of the head unit was in the normal position in the dash, but it had a walnut blanking plate mounted to the original motorized face mechanism.

The face was mounted in the steering wheel!

If you had space for a headunit, maybe consider a retro style head unit on display.
