Right, bacisally i am at my wits end with my mini's electrics - she is now draining batteries like they're going out of fashion. They have always been dodgy, have set on fire, have been bodged and 'fixed' and have been in to two different garages ot be fixed and each time they have come out worse. I am biting the bullet and thinking that i just need to get an entire new loom and get the bloody thing sorted once and for all.

Now, my question. Would anyone know how much i would be looking at paying for this work to be done?

A local garage have quoted £600 for me to include the loom - does this sound about right?

Thanks!

No, lol. Thats mental. A new loom can be had for about £175ish (Autospark I think - ask Emily Fry on fb mini groups) or use minispars 15% discount now about £175 as well!

Fitting.... depends who you choose but £600 is a pants-pulled-down offer.

Assuming its a carb mini i'd expect about 8 hours work plus the cost of the loom.

How much they charge for the work?

Injection will obviousely cost a bit more.

Look for a local club - there will be a local person in a local mini club with passion who will do it for a lot less, and likely be nicer than a standard garage and probably know more.

Ok the last one I did was a all day job your biggest issue is  the front to rear, I would try and get someone who understands old  car electrics as most issues dont require a new loom unless yours is cracked.  There are to many add a bit here and a bit there merchants out there. where is your biggest issue ? in the bonnet ? if so a new front loom would take care of it.

I don't, I'd say that's about on par. I'd estimate a 1 - 1.5 days to fit a full loom in a car with a full interior, it can take half a day in a stripped shell.

I'm not sure where some of you guys think garages make their money? This is how much it costs to employ a professional on an hourly rate.

Anyway, Mini looms are very simple things. If you don't need the car as a daily driver I'd highly recommend doing the work yourself. You don't need any special tools - some crimps, a soldering iron and some shrinkwrap. The wiring diagram in the back of the Haynes manual is good enough to repair an existing loom. Don't be scared of it!

If you do need to pay someone, have you looking into using an autoelectrician rather than a general garage? It might cost more per hour but you may not require so many hours.
