Hi, thought it was time to start posting some photos of my project.

The plan is to design, fabricate, prep/paint and engineer as much as possible at home in my garage.

Its aim to be a road legal track car used for the occasional mini event.

Wanting to be different I have looked at many engines but find myself biased towards the powerhouse that is Suzuki,

a bulletproof, tried and tested engine with plenty of potential.

Mk1 styling, lightweight, minimal but fit for purpose, understated paint job, nothing garish.

Feedback and ideas are greatly appreciated.

I picked the mini up from where I was storing it and brought it home mid October.

The current deadline is to have it ready to use February 2016

Really really nice, clean work. And great welding. I have no doubts this will be fantastic.

Fibreglass doors initial fitment with standard hinges. Door is 5mm wider than a steel one so after some thought ordered some mk1 hinges and 'A' panels.

Mk1 rear light conversion plates, took lots of persuasion with my dead blow to get them to fit well but ok in the end, +/- 1mm to each other. ordered my lights, so just got to wait for them to arrive, then fit to check they're bang on.

Welded up all the holes in the engine bay ready for a clean minimal look. Gen Heritage Scuttle (one of the few panels I wouldn't replace with cheaper alternative) tacked ready for fibreglass/carbon fibre front end, once I know it all lines up ok, I will plug weld it up.

Mk1 A panel and hinges offered up on N/S and fitted. Took my time getting all the gaps right and am fairly happy with the result, albeit these doors are a bit of a pig to fit right, took plenty of trimming and sanding and being mk3 doors I have to modify the edge that meets the A panels substantially. (ask me if I would use them again once I'm done!)

DSCF3256_zpsbca39dda.jpg

Taking a lightweight approach and in an effort not to pile in layers of mild steel like the original inner panels which would down the line cause potential rust problems I fabricated some simple channel hinge reinforcement pieces.

DSCF3259_zps570369ef.jpg

Using Jenolite I treated all the suspect areas in the engine bay and the seams and a couple other places on the car, the shell is mostly good as I only rebuilt it 6 years or so ago.

Engine bay in Primer, I have been rubbing/sanding through to bare metal and using a Epoxy primer with anti corrosion properties. I'm told its good stuff, not too expensive and it goes on great!

One finished, one to go, got to be easier right?..?

That's all the photos for now, I was a bit more confident second time round and to cut a story short....I trimmed the second door too much, 4mm too much. So its currently in the garage having had the piece I cut off fibreglassed back on. First time using fibreglass so we will see how this holds out, it certainly looks the part but will soon tell when I start trimming it back again hopefully tomorrow evening :)

Lovely fabrication work there, I like that you've added the curve on the back of the A-panel and bottom of the door.

Got out of that one! who knows how I cut as much off the first time as I did but on the flip side I now know how to use fibreglass which is handy!

Going to order some CDS tube over the next couple of days, I was planning on using 50.8x3.2 for my main loops and to tie them together and use 44x3.2 for everything else, what's peoples opinions on this?

Lights turned up finally! Popped them on to check they fit ok, very happy with the fitment and even happier with the look

Going to order boot lid, fasteners and a tube bender tonight. Hopefully source an engine soon, keep looking, preferably want a complete 99/00 bike with low mileage as poss.

Hi, this looks like a great project and I'm really looking forward to seeing your updates. I really like how you have gone about the doors! It will look really nice when it's done I'm sure! Are you going rear engine rear wheel drive, or front engine with a trick rear suspension set up?

Thanks spaceibiza, plan is to rear engine rear wheel drive. I'm not overly biased to rwd or fwd in a mini but it makes sense to rwd it I think. All wheel drive would be ace! ;)

with the short wheelbase of a mini, pulling=fwd is better then pushing=rwd. AWD would be ace, true but adds a lot weight too...

I used 44mm cds for my roll cage and it is seriously chunky, I think 50.8mm is a overkill on a mini

R1mini David, had a good think about cage tube dimensions and have decided to buy two lengths of 44mm CDS. Thanks for the input, do you have any photos on here of your cage?
