So I've been wanting to try my hand a bit of metal sculpting for ages and finally decided to have a go. Hopefully starting with something fairly simple so that I could give it to the misses as a Christmas Present.

So I thought I'd do a little blog of how I get on producing a bunch of roses. I'd seen a few people over on the mig welding forum do them and thought they look really good. They have been posted loads of time over there so thought I would let you lot see how I get on instead.

First of all the petal template. One of the chaps had kindly produced a template to print out with the shapes on.

It was then a case of cutting the shapes out.

Transferring them to a sheet of .7 sheet steel.

And then cutting them out with the tin snips.

I've got about 12 petals cut out so far so a bit more to go to make 5 roses.

I also ordered some 6mm steel rod to make the stems.

More to follow...

Interesting. I still have no idea what im getting the misses. Could be a new carbon fibre grill for my project. After all it is the thought that counts haha.

Cant wait to see the end product

Awesome idea, I'd love something like that (roses not carbon fibre grill - although new radiator is needed for moo). Let us know how it goes, she'll love them I'm sure!

Well a small update..... I'm still cutting the bloody shapes out!!! haha.

Had a chest infection last week so that pretty much took me out for about a week.

Really wish I had of gone to one of my ductwork clients that's got a plazma cutting bench now.... :(

I've got 2 buds left to cut out then I can start shaping them.

At this rate she might only get one before Christmas day!

So the big reveal then....

Managed to get the toses made just in time for the misses birthday which is today.

Nearly ended in disaster after slicing a chunk out of my thumb drilling one of the petals.

Just need to decide on some way of presenting them now.

As i cant even get my Mrs to come with me to a show i think she would be handing me divorce papers in the new year if i had made some of these for her as she would prefer the norm when it comes to flowers lol.

They do look good thou do those mate ;-)

Excellent idea, and one I wont be trying myself! It seems every attempt I have made in the past for flowers that aren't actual flowers aren't what they want! Women!

But these look brill, how are you going to prevent them rusting?

Cheers for the kind words chaps. They went down every well with my misses she loves them. Mines the same Lee but hopefully when the vans done she will get more involved with shows.

As to them rusting will see how it goes as they will be inside anyway. The rust mightt make them look quite cool anyway. If it get to bad i'll rub them down and get some spray varnish probably.

I just used a pair of pliers to fold the petals up on alternate sides.
