That is some very good work. I'd love to see pics of the finished Moke.

Seeing this thread has me in two minds.

I was offered a 4wd box at Stanford Hall years ago. I did not have the £100 on me. I am happy and sad that I did not buy it.

OK, picking up where I left off and then some!

Alex_B     The Austin Ant did use an A Series Engine and the Gearbox fitted to the Ant was made' from a Mini Gearbox, but had considerably more cast on to the back of it to the extent that they needed to lay the engine and gearbox back on an angle. It also had Hi and Lo Range and the Steering Rack & part of the Front Suspension (?) was also part of the Gearbox Casting. It will not fit in to a Mini or a Moke, it really is much too big. I know the Prototype 4WD Mokes that were done here, they did look at an Ant with the idea of basing them on those, but that was all abandoned, most dues to cost.

The ST 4WD Mini does use Ant Trailing Arms, but I think that's about all from an Ant.

Flying Scot    Yes, the Owner does appriciate it all, thankfully!

mab01uk     Many thanks for posting up the ST 4WD Mini photos. I have some of 'Quadra' and also the Factory Prototype I'll post up later (when I get a decent Internet connection). Interestingly (but no surprise) that Mini suffered the same failure as did this gearbox. Back to the Future?

nicklouse     Any idea what sort / type of 4WD Gearbox you were offered?  That has me intregued.

Many of you guys were asking if there was another gearbox (or the like). At this stage, this is the only one I have done and while it took me a long while to do, it is actually a fairly simple conversion and can also be reversed very easily. I have no plans what so ever to put them in to any kind of production!  I will at some future point be scratch building my own gearbox, not a conversion or an adaption, there are just way too many limitations and short comings trying to do a 'good one' working from that. I'll be fabricating a Gearcase and likely making (at least in part) the Geartrain. It will be 5 Speed with Hi and Lo Range.  Currently I am toying with / toiling over some designs on this as well as the rear suspension set up, which will be trailing arm. I have to say, I did learn a great deal from doing this conversion, not only about a 4WD Gearbox, but also machining,  measuring and job planning (of this type of job). I will also say that I am pleased with the outcome and try as he might to break it (on my instructions), so far, so good.

Once again, many thanks for the very kind comments :shy:

not much that I remember. PTO coupling was a cruciform and the whole thing looked a bit like the original here. a bit Heath Robinson.

I did (and still do) wonder about Propshaft wind up.

I felt then that is was a home brew job but after seeing your pics Mmmmmm.

Gotya on the 'Heath Robinson'.

This and the Prototype were not full time 4WD, they have a Dog Clutch in the front of the Rear Diff, this is the selector as fitted to the Prototype

I did look long and hard at fitting a Viscus Clutch, definitely some advantages and definitely possible (fairly easy actually) which would allow full time 4WD.

I think the ST 4WD Mini was full Time 4WD, which wouldn't have helped it's longevity, then again, it was only supposed to be driven on a rally cross track.

Many thanks for that link, I just read through the whole thread. Not much to them - at first glace, but clearly what makes them work is the type of fluid used. It seems that the original is largly Silicon Based (lifeform?) but I suspect that there would have also been a lubricant additive as from the little I have learnt about Silicon Fluid, it's not a Lubricant and can in fact be agressive on parts that run in it. On the otherhand, too much added lubricant and the VC won't VC!  I think that was about where the guy was at.
