Quote:-
"The Mini crushed on Thursday in New Jersey had its VIN number swapped with a 1988 car in an effort to skirt the law and look like a legal import, the AP says. It's not clear when the car was seized or from whom, but NJ.com indicates it was under investigation for some time.
A few things tipped officials off, like the fact that the VIN number was for a right-hand drive car, an engine that wasn't from the 1988 model year and an airbag system that wouldn't have been present on a car of that vintage.
Though there is "no evidence that the person who planned to buy the Mini was involved in manipulating the vehicle," the buyer will not be reimbursed for the crushing.
There's a video that goes with it. I strongly advise you not to watch it."

I just don't understand doing that. I can understand a desire to make an example and discourage others, but surely that could equally be achieved by a large fine? Just seems unethical to carry out such a wasteful act of destruction - not exactly environmentally sound either. I say that not just because it is a mini, but regardless of what type of car gets crushed as result of something like this.

Because he's paid to and probably does not give a monkeys. Lets be honest here wrong car, wrong Vin = dodgy motor. You flout the law they will come down hard on you.

No sympathy, yes shame the car was crushed but this time they were caught out and paid the price.

I just don't understand doing that.

So what should they do with a car that was blatantly a ringer?

Possibly stolen from here ? They all have to go somewhere and the buyers are obviously accepting them knowing the vins and paperwork are iffy . And something was said about 40 landrovers as well - they get pinched alot to .

I really hate such blatant ringers, they make a mockery of the mini scene and promote theft.  This car had a left hand drive vin (pre 88) but was  2000 mpi in right hand drive.

I'd have happily been the bloke driving the grabber.

So the lesson to be learnt from this then is if your car is stolen and given dodgy vin plates the authorities will crush it for you.

I wonder was any attempt made to see if this car matched the description of any missing cars in the UK? It seems that crushing it is their only policy, with no attempt to return this to its potentially legal owner.

I sincerely hope whoever enacts this policy one day has their pride and joy stolen and it ends up in the crusher.

Its potentially legal owner (if it was stolen) may have already been paid out by his insurers.  If it's been 'ringed' with any sense, there'd be no trace of the original ID anyway.
