I'm planning to take up my Mini's carpet to put down some sound deadening.

Both the carpet and the fibrous underlay seem to be glued down, at least at the edges.
What is the best way to lift the carpet, is it good/bad to refit the current underlay, and what's best to do about gluing the carpet (and any underlay) back down.

I think be lucky to not tear the old stuff when pulling it up, but guess could some how get scrapper underneath to take it up.

Glue it back down, can use contact adhesive, but i never glue mine to be honest. If i do anything id use double sided tape on edges

I'm pretty sure the carpets aren't original.
to be honest I haven't dug that far yet so it may just be the edges, and they may be taped down.

Don't worry, when you lift it the paint, and then the rust, and finally holes will be revealed. See you on the next question "Welder Recommendations"!

seems logical to me :D

if you can get a good surface, get some good heavy duty velcro to stick to the back of the carpet and onto the car, then you can velcro the carpets in. helps having new carpets/fresh paint. you could sew some velcro patches to the carpet backs if they are too dirty/dusty.
