Any pattern panel ie magnum needs to have the primer coat removed as its very very poor. Remove it fully.

Heritage is far superior. If it can be easily removed with thinners then its no good.

If the ecoat is of good quality scotch it off then prime. If its flakey remove it all. Good ecoat like on heritage panels is a great etch base and rust protection

You still need to check the Heritage coating though. Have a good close up look. I have seen spider trails of rust in a couple of panels. This needs to be removed and treated before painting.

I agree with sonikk4. Where we use Heritage panels we always sand them down back to the bare metal for that very reason. You will also inevitably burn some of the coating off anyway when welding the panels up. Where we use M-Machine panels we source them in bare metal. We then use a good zinc based etch primer which we apply once all the dressing of the welding has been done and before we apply seam sealants.

If you are going to use pattern panels and you do strip them to bare metal then make sure you apply your primer soon afterwards as I have seen these panels turn brown within hours of having the e-coat removed.

I didn't think you could get zinc based etch primer ??
