Not really an update, but I tidied up my house and packed all the parts that need to be fitted onto the couch:

Still need to sandblast and paint the brake dust shields, buy paint for the hubs and paint them and then finish assembling the brake calipers and brakes... Lots to do and it's quite intimidating.  :-|

& to find a set of those funky accessory sheepskin seat covers & modify them to fit your bucket seats.

by the way: why are your stripes different to the 1275E brochure? did they change the design over time?

Haha! Fortunately I've given up the desire to go for a completely original car and instead I'm taking the route of tasteful mods  =]

Yes. That's a brochure for a 1980 1275 E. They changed a few things for the 1981-1983 cars. Not entirely sure it was for the better, as the 1980 spec looked really neat.

Here are images of 1980-1983 cars, with some of the differences.

1980:

The seats were a simple brown cloth design, which looks really clean:

Engine bay of the 1980 car:

hSj9oQx.jpg

Washer bottle was the smaller one, and it was mounted on the firewall.

HfXiF1I.jpg

(actually got one of these for my car, but forgot to get the pump... sigh).

1981-1983:

The seats had a brown checkered pattern, which I'm not a big fan of.

Different steering wheel. The 1980 car was the three spoked example and the 1981-1983 cars had this one:

Engine bay, 1981-1982. In 1983, they moved the tag to the inner wing by the radiator.

Washer bottle was the larger one and it was mounted onto the inner wing:

The exterior. You can see the stripe is different, with one thick stripe and one thin stripe:

On a side note, some of the cars had a set of Lucas Square 8 spot lights, and I've become keen on fitting a set if I can find a set:

They look kind of cool, so I'm keen :P

Just read through this thread and I've got to congratulate you on having a cool car and getting stuck in and learning.

Quite a difference from your original posts of "I don't know anything about cars" to now. :)

Like several posters, I didn't know about SA versions of the Mini so thanks for the education,
Steve

Thanks Steve :)

Yeah, I think that's fair. The more one works on their own car, the more confident one becomes in their own ability and the idea of trying to tackle different jobs.

You're most welcome. We have quite a unique Mini history in SA. Unique models and variations on standard models resulting from changes made to adhere to domestic market rules (and possibly the availability of parts.)

Haha! Exactly, once you convert pricing to ZAR it just becomes an unreasonable expense. There are more important mechanical and electrical jobs to tackle first.

A massive thank you to Tim (timmy850), for sending this steering wheel badge to me. I really appreciate it. It looks really good and would look great when I get the steering wheel restored.  =]  =]

I've messaged Andrew and if I get a chance this week, or next early next week, I'll pop by his place and get his advice on the correct way to renew the wheel.
