Recently connected the ICE up and although it's a bit premature in the whole build scheme of things, couldn't help fire it up.

Everything makes noise in the right places but the amp started to billow noxious dark smoke - not good.

Bought a Rockford punch 60.2 from talk audio, second hand, not a great deal of money.

Now, it seems pretty impossible to wire these babies up wrong so I guess I've got a dud. Any other thoughts?

It's certainly possible to wire anything up incorrectly. There's no chance your speaker impedance is a bit low is there?
This amp won't take less than four ohms bridged or two ohms stereo..

To clarify, it may be that your speaker terminal are lightly contacting metal or that your wires are shorting somewhere. It's very rare to have a short that still allows the speakers to produce sound, but it's not impossible.
Do you have any pics of the wiring connections at the amp? What speakers are you powering? Are there any crossovers or other potential problem areas in line?

Post a pic of the wiring maybe?

Which user did you buy it from?

I bought it from Rob, 'xBoBx', it was only £25+P&P.

I'll have a good look at the wiring when I get around to the boot again. Just had to take the engine out again so slightly distracted.

The Sub is a Genesis 10". I will check the ohmage when I can but I can't imagine it's less than 4???. The sub amp obviously is mono wired, as per the instructions  http://www.rockfordf...100-200-MAN.pdf

Hmmm. Can carbon fibre conduct? The speaker binding posts are cut through a carbon fibre skinned sub box. They are 5cm or so away from each other but in direct contact with the carbon fibre front face.

Carbon is a Good conductor !

true, but what about carbon fibre. surely carbon fibre uses a resin (like fibre glass), which wouldnt be conductive?

But a cut or drilled edge will be raw...

For those not in the know, skinning involves using carbon fibre weave , stuck to the surface, then resin on top. As ruckus mentions, there will be a raw edge. Houston, I think we have a problem!
I 'lol test the resistance between the binding posts with all connectors removed, out of interest, but I'll wire the speaker directly without the binding posts and see if the schmoken persists!

I'll report back but if it is this then I hope I haven't damaged the amp too much

Well I'm sure none of you have been sleeping whilst waiting for an answer.

In short, does carbon fibre skinning conduct; yes.

Sadly, rather well. With all else disconnected the resistance between the 2 binding posts was a rather paltry 2.5 ohms. Someway short of infinity.

New binding posts cut in. Temporary wired in the power again, and we have lift off, minus the smoke. Bloody amazing how good a proper sub can sound!

As you were.
