Hi guys,

I've got my mini stripped but now want to reove all paint. What is the best way to get down to bare metal?

Thanks

options include sand blasting, sanding, paint stripper and wire wheel in a grinder.

What is the current situation? Are there many layers of paint or just the factory paint?

Paint stripper is quite effective and cheap but you need to be careful.

Sand blasting is quite expensive and some places won't do big flat panels due to the risk of warping.

Sanding is slow but with a big box of 80 grit discs and alot f patience, it is about the best option in my opinion.

Some people use a wire wheel in a grinder but this is not without its risks as heavy use can thin the metal plus it is very noisy and time consuming.

Alot also depends on what is going on under the paint like large amounts of filler for instance which can be a pain. Also paint stripper will not remove it.

Last time i used paint stripper, i brushed it on thick and then covered the panel with cling film until the paint had wrinkled and then scraped it off.

Ben

I have been looking at the 3m strip and clean discs as an option when I do mine, if these don't work will revert to chemical stripper. I stripped a bonnet with p80 with my da but found discs clogged quickly and hence I used a lot of them

Clean and strip disks are excellent for stripping flat panels. No problems with clogging and don't generate too much heat in the panel. Also you don't run any risks of damaging the metal below as they are formed from nylon set in resin so only remove that/paint.

One issue I would raise with them is that they don't go very far so best to buy quite a few if you've got a big job to do.

That's good to know, I have a full mk2 shell to strip as previously has been painted with synthetic and I want to remove it all and re paint in 2k products, probably clear over base.

The thing about chemical dipping is that it strips box sections like the sills and front section between subframe mounts that can't be repainted.

Paint stripper is a good choice and it's also cheap!
