In a few weeks I plan to give the car a good service,

I was just wondering what parts people use, like whats the best oil, best spark plugs, do people replace the sump plug or just the washer etc...

Thanks David

Oil, I use halfords as its just down the road

Any of these:

http://www.amazon.co...r/dp/B002RPJ67E

Oil filter:

http://www.eurocarparts.com/oil-filter

Type your reg in and it will do the work for you, You can use these for the spark plugs too! or look here

You only need to change the washer for servicing, although I ran out last time I did one so cleaned and reused the old one with no porblems!

As I service mine regularly I order 5-10 of these at a time:

Also clean/replace your air filer depending on the age!

Hope this helps!

I've found my timing gun to be very useful.

The best oil is always a controversial subject, that gets debated here quite regularly. The general consensus tends to be that you can't go too far wrong with a decent quality 20w/50 mineral oil though.

You'll need a Unipart GFE443 (or equivalent) oil filter (assuming you have the standard screw on type), a replacement air filter (assuming you don't have the washable high flow type) and a set of spark plugs (standard NGK or Champion are fine, assuming you have a standardish engine setup).

If the car is new to you and/or you don't know it's service history, then also consider replacing the fan belt, thermostat, radiator cap, HT leads, rotor arm and dizzy cap too (also the points & condenser if you don't have electronic ignition). These parts tend to be relatively inexpensive and ignition component problems in particular are probably the biggest cause of breakdowns for classic minis, so it makes sense to keep them well maintained.

As mentioned above, you also need to grease the suspension components regularly on a classic mini, so owning a grease gun is essential. You'll also need a brake adjuster tool/spanner as the rear brake shoes on the classic mini don't self adjust like they do on a modern car. If you have an earlier model with drums all round, then this is even more important as you'll need to adjust the front shoes as well.
