i'm going to get my car re-sprayed as its a bit scabby. i plan to do all the prepwork, i.e stripping the paint off the rusty bits and wire brushing/sanding etc to get it away, POR 15 it and prime it. the worst part of the car is the front (as always!) but i plan to get a FG flip front for it so thts not really a problem. what i want to ask is;

can i get away with priming the rusty bits a bit higher than the paint, and then keying it all down to the same level (keying paint as well, i mean) as i dont have the equipment/means to prime a whole car! the paint is going to be the same colour (primrose yellow) which is just basic flat 2 pack. is this ok? or do i need to strip all the paint and prime the whole thing?

cheers

The rusty bits need to be taken to clean metal, use a broken drill bit or a dremmel multi tool to make sure you get every last bit of rust out the dimples etc.

Treat the metal etc, and as for priming, you just need to prime the bits that have rust, you dont need to do anything to the good bits of the panels.

The reason some prefer to do this is just incase "the good bits" have had repairs done, because if done well you would not be able to see them.

Yup mate you have to key the whole car otherwise the paint just wont adhere. You basically want to get ridf of any shiny paint and make it Matt finish by flatting it down.

Bare metal is only necessary on rust spots so that you can get rid of all the rust.

As your not changing colour you dont need to prime the whole car but you do need to key the whole car really well.

Make sure there are no shiny bits of paint anywhere, the corners and round windows and handles (If you dont remove them) the panel seems, door edges etc are the areas to start keying first.

The reason for this is that this is where the paint gererally peels from, and when you start to get tired you end up missing them out..

So all the edges and round all the fixtures first (Although it would be much easier to remove them)
once they are done well, then do the main parts of the panels.

Take you time to do this part properly as it is one of the most important parts..

You can key the car with scotch brite pads, they come in different grades (Purple ones should do fine)
Or use P600 wet and dry (With water and washing liquid).

Are you spraying 2k paint yourself ? or have you got someone to do it for you ?

no, i'm just prepping the car, some else (a body repair shop) is doing the painting. i'd get them to do everything but i just can't afford it!

do i put the water and washing up liquid onto the surface first and then key, or vice versa?

Just dip the scotch pad/wet and dry in the water...

I tend t use a hydra blade or an old wipre blade to wipe the surface after I have keyed as this way you can see the shiny bits left behind..

Take some pics as you go along, very good for adding to the re-sale value if you can show things were done properly..

Probably be best to prime her up if you are going to change to that luminous green snot colour.

You'll have to do all the prep as normal, but then once the primer is on... do it all over again to get the primer flat and keyed. Then you can whack on the colour. Are you spraying celly or 2k or 1k?

darn it! i think the paint i'm gettin is 2k, but i think i'll just be keeping it yellow then. i'd love to change the colour but i just dont have the means to prime a whole car (my garage has no power and is really small, its more of a lock-up actually) i may just get the people who are spraying the car to prime it too, hopefully it should just be the labour charges again if i provide the primer.

if i do the prep work as i was going to going to do, i.e key all the car and prime the rust treated bits, does the garage just have to prime and key it (incase u can't tell, i'm on a tight budget so every little helps!)

cheers :geek:
