New Ball Joint Retaining Nut /spring Washer Failed M.o.t

suspension

Best Answer Cooperman , 18 February 2015 - 10:34 PM

Modern suspension does not normally use taper lock for securing suspension. It is often just a clamp bolt onto a parallel shaft and that does require a Nylok nut for security. The advantage is that a taper-lock ball-pin splitter is not required to take the suspension to pieces.

Can some please advise !  Fitted New set of Ball Joints from Mini spares my Garage has failed them on the Retaining Nut ( High Tensiel Nut and Spring Washer), apparently No Locking Mechanism , they have said It should have a Nylon Locking Nut , Minispares are disputing this so I have no M.O.T right now .

Garage said to drill an eight hole through nut and add a split pin through ?? seems like they dont know Minis ?

stuck what to do next.

None of the Factory Fitted ones ever had split pins or any other type of locking device, only a normal nut and a heavy grade spring washer.

I'll post up a page from the Factory Parts book

^^^^ Yes, but have the rules and regs changed? The MOT is now a nightmare

I think I spoke to you on the phone last night, and Gavin has also e-mailed you this morning. The ball joint is supplied with a high tensile nut and a thick sprung washer. The garage clearly doesn't know what should be fitted as standard.

Thanks for detailed post here appreciated needed this confirmed , Dont think my garage are into classics , but are saying they are guided by their regulations now and this must have a locking mechanism.

Is a spring washer not a locking mechanism ? this is what is unclear ?

They are correct in saying it has to have a 'locking mechanism' and it has one. The Spring Washer. Those are the same rules we have here (and I think in most parts of the world). Another 'Locking Mechanisim' is to simply fit a Lock Nut. They are 7/16" UNF.

As far as I was aware, you can lock with either a Nyloc, Spring Washer or a nut & split pin. If the garage are being awkward, you could always fit nylocs. Either that or find a different garage.

According to this - http://www.motester.co.uk/mot-guide#suspension    there are no changes.

Good to see Minispares giving support.

Hello thanks again I have bought 7/16" locknuts for this only thing is they are the correct thread but quiet a bit smaller on the outer flats ( not as sturdy) so they may fail this also. ??

A nyloc won't be high tensile material so if  (and I wouldn't) you were going to fit them I would do it purely to pass the MOT, and then put back the correct nuts and sprung washer ASAP. If you then obtain an MOT, I would still put in a complaint to VOSA afterwards for the failure of the MOT in the first place

No I had used them regular with my normal car had no problems they are an accident repair / m.o.t garage been here in bromley for years.

Guess they dont like Classics. as they refuse to work on them .. should have gone else where prehaps for this one.

I have just put both my mini's through their MOT (December) both have Mini Spares supplied ball joint kits with the washer and nut as on yours and they passed with no comment. Take the information supplied on here and have a word with the garage to prove that it is to original specification. Dependent on there reaction I would be dubious about using them again, accepting that people can make mistakes it is how they respond when faced with proof of their error as to future business with them
