Im going to look at a 2007 Megane F1 on the weekend.

Anyone had one, or know a bit about them?

I've always liked them, and this one is up for good money!

Its a Renault so it means problems. usually electrical stuff.

I bought a Renault after being advised not to and regret it.

My mate has an F1 edition R26. He loves it. I can't comment on reliability as he's only had it 3 months, but I think they are fairly solid. Certainly no problems so far.

I would probably buy a BMW 130i if I was after a quick hatch for £7k.

decent enough car. they sorted a lot of the niggles out around '05 ish. i've got a meg 225 (think that's what one it is anyway) coming up for sale over the next week or two. will have to check on engine mods but running around 300bhp with quaiffe diff. good map on it and it's a very drivable car.

As a general note on French electronics, my mate is an electronics engineer with over twenty five years experience. His wife has a 306 and a mate of ours has a fat bummed Megane. Over several years we have pulled our hair out trying to hunt down and fix seemingly random electrical gremlins. Some days they are there, other days others are there. My way of looking at it is that if a guy with twenty five years experience of working with complex electronic systems can't get to the bottom of it, what chance have the rest of us got? Because of that I wouldn't buy a French car unless it was so cheap I just couldn't resist. The only exception would be one of the three litre clios as they are so awesome I would take the risk (if it was cheap).

As far as my research has come up with, the later F1 Meganes had pretty much all of the electrical issues sorted, plus better build quality.

Im going to take it for a spin, just to have a think!

You will need a new gearbox every 500 miles.

My little brother had one. Electrics were a nightmare!
Lights, windows, and injectors, gearbox, and lots more.
He loved it and it and they look great from behind.
But very heavy cars.

Somehow I doubt that...

Maybe not 500, but i knew someone with a 225 which had done 26k miles and he was on his 3rd gearbox. He also had a 197 which had lots of gearbox issues.
