I'm just getting back into minis after a long lay off and I'm afraid the old grey matter is letting me down. Under the bench of my workshop I have an unused original ST gear kit for as stated above, but it is for a remote gearbox, I want to fit it into a rod change box, am I right in thinking that I need a pair of shafts ( lay and main) for a rod change box then it will fit ok?

If you have an early rod box, then it's a straight swap. If it's an A+, then main shaft change etc. Plenty of threads on here. Have a look at Guess works info.

It'll depend on the type of rod-change box, won't it?

A-series (remote or rod) would have the same diameter layshaft?  A-series vs A+ would have different diameter layshaft?

yep, to the best of my recolection

all A series use the same third motion shaft ( the 1st motion to 3rd motion bearing is different on the A+)

reverse is different between rod and remote box's due to the selector.

putting a series gears into an A+ box can be done, but you need to file the case to clear the 1st to 3rd motion bearing as the early small diameter A series one is longer.

I concur, A series into A+ case can be done, just need to relieve the case a little over the 1st motion bearing to allow the fitment of the longer A series mainshaft.

You will, however, have to change the reverse idler from a remote to a rod, this is not the standard reverse idler but unique to the ST gearset, still available part number c-str303 (£52 ish)
