How do you get the inner cv gator off the front axle?

You need to knock the outr joint of, both gaitors will slip off, so id renew both gaitors, to remove the driveshaft you need to split the balljoints, so check these for wear and grease them up before disassembly as you may need to renew these too!

The inner CV gator can be removed by splitting the inner CV. Assuming you have pot joints, all you have to do is remove the gator clamp around the pot and take the axle out of the pot. If the knuckles/balls are worn inside, they will be prone to falling out of the "crown", so be careful removing it all. The crown can then be removed from the axle several ways. If it's not too baked, a sharp blow on the crown outwards will do. If it's particularly stuck, you may have to remove the end cap and apply a puller.

To get the axle to have enough play to remove it from the inner pot, you'll have to remove at least one of the ball joints on the hub, I prefer the top one.

Keep in mind that if the gator has been broken for a while and the pot joint is severly worn, it may be a better idea to replace the whole joint including gator.

You really shouldn't split the joint into two parts to do this, just pull the shaft out of it. If you find you have to split it then at least mark the inner and outer parts of the joint indelibly first so that you can get it back together in the same orientation as it was before. Be careful if you do this on the car, only the gator holds the joint together. And if you find the balls do fall out easily by themselves replace the joint.
