You basically just need to get rid of all the shine of your paint work. once you havea matt finish on your surface it's ready for painting! use 800grit, if you want a reallllllly smooth finish use 1200 after the 800 too.

Not 100% sure if you are talking about using 1200 before or after top coat.

Before the primer you should use 600 wet and dry, after it is primed use 800 and to flat the top coat use 1200 upwards

using 1200 before painting will leave the surface too smooth and may lead to paint adhesion problems. Hence the reason why you flat back paint in the first place..

Hope this helps
Cheers

Nitromorse does the job, but it's a bar-steward to get all the traces off before you paint.

I used three cans of bare metal panel cleaner on a roof and it still wasn't enough. Six months later the paint started to lift and I had to redo it again.

Oh what fun that was, lol.

A sander is the way to go, or it's a block and arm power and that takes ages and you end up with arms like the Hulk.

Frost do a wonderful paint remover, but if you have the time then just use 600 with a warm soapy bucket, get a block and do it that way.

I always bare metal if i am doing a re-spray, but thats just me.

If staying to same colour or similar then do as others say.

Rubbing down just takes time, and B&Q have random sanders.

The detail sanders are find for bootlids too!

Yes they do seem to have random sanders now, when I was looking for one about 2 years back I couldn't find one anywhere. Sorry about that.
