Hi all,

In the middle of replacing my rocker shaft and rockers. I am using the minispares 'Cooper S forged 1.3 rockers'. I started sliding the new shaft in and assembling the rockers and springs onto it as I go, but I think the rocker pad shape and the way it contacts the valve looks odd. It's like the rocker is made with a sort of twist to it, and the pad is shaped at an angle (they all look the same by the way). As a result when you bring the rocker into contact with the valve stem, it is not contacting it 'flat', instead there is just a small area of contact at an angle. Pics below - Is this normal or is there a problem with these rockers?

It's fairly normal for them to be off-set, but the twist,,,,,,,  well, that ain't remotely right.

Oooh, that particular rocker looks as though it has twisted during manufacture and as it is would create some side load on the valve and valve guide, the left hand side rocker looks more even across the valve stem head but still sits to one side.

I would email the pictures to Minispares regarding your concerns and ask for their opinion, i am sure you could also contact Simon from minispares who is on the forum to help you with your problem.... i would not use your car until it has been sorted.

Good luck.

its me again, i have just had a good look at the right hand rocker and it seems as though there is less metal surrounding the rocker when it has been located onto the shaft, the casting difference is staggering compared to the left hand rocker.

Related question, I need the car back on the road, so I think I will just reuse my original sintered rockers and of course the new shaft. The rockers were actually in pretty good shape when I took them off, alot better than I expected, very minimal wear. However as my car is a 1275, some of the rockers are offset to the valve, so the little bit of wear on these rockers is to one side. Is it a good / bad idea (remember I am fitting a new shaft) to swap positions when re-fitting so that these offset ones have 'new' wear surfaces to use? I'm thinking mainly about 1 and 8 which have the largest offset and are opposite to each other.

Spiguy - I have had the same problem with 'twisted' S rockers from Minispares.

Did not notice until I had them fitted with offset bushes, most annoying.  What I did (and I'm not recommending you do this) was to twist them until the ends of the rockers were parallel with the valve tips.

Brute force and ignorance. But seems to work, so far...
