Hey Spider, Do you fit a copper washer under the head of the M20 ?

Should I flood the M20 threads with thread lock (Loctite) when I install & rely on that to give a good seal ?

What do you recommend ?

Yes on both counts, only I don't flood the threads with loctite, just enough to get the job done. I also clean both threads before applying the loctite with thinners. Also, be sure that the copper washer is annealed, so many out of the box these days are hard.

There is nothing wrong with helicoils just the expense of buying the set, for what will be a one off job.

What I did to repair mine as I don't have access to engineering machines anymore, was as Spider did tap out the thread to 20mm, but just use the 20mm bolt and a copper washer, I removed the magnet from the old sump plug and pressed it into the 20mm bolt. But don't use a high tensile M20 they are a pig to drill, and use plenty of cutting compound on the tap to try and stop the swarf entering the sump.

Now that is an idea and a half, why try and make a sleave with the lathe when you are already half way there with a m20 bolt.

All I need to do now is find out if my friend has a 18.5mm drill bit and m20 tap, otherwise I might as well buy the both myself and a m20 magnetic sump plug.

Thanks for the brilliant idea
