Hi Everyone

Im based in Southampton and need to replace my 1986 Chelsea's outer sills after an MOT failure,

Does anyone have any recommendations for specialists in the area for this kind of bodywork?

Considering the floor and inner sills are in good nick, what kind of cost should i be looking at?

My local migwelder has quoted me £250 including the sills,

Cheers in advance,

Peter

Hard to say without pictures, but assuming that you're right about the condition of the surrounding metalwork then that's a great price for fitting proper vented sills and undertaking any small repairs that are required. It is inevitable that when the old sill is removed there will be the odd hole or area of thin metal, especially where the outer sill meets the floor.

I would just check with him that :

1. He plans to use proper vented sills and not oversills

2. Small repairs to the exposed areas when the sills are removed are included

3. Any repairs done will be done by cutting out back to good metal and butt welding in new metal, not by patching over rust.

4. Any welding done will be cleaned up, primed, painted and seam sealed.

250  to cut off and replace with original sills is cheap. a sill is 30 quid, plus welding, plus sealer and stone chip etc, is pushing 100 quid in parts alone, if solid i would want 250 a side labour to do it.

Hmm, seems like I need to have another chat to the local chap to make sure they'll be no nasty surprises down the line then!

To those who recommended RJM, I have got in touch with him and he seems very professional and straight up, and guesses about £150 per sill, assuming the floor and inners are still good.

It appears to already have oversills

Looks like a new door step could be required too.

It depends on your budget and general condition of your mini as to what to do.

If it is your daily driver then I would pay the welder £250 and enjoy another years MOT.

If you have deeper pockets include floor work, door steps and inner sills for a restoration quality repair.

yeah, you have oversills and the doorstep looks pretty crusty - can't see that being much good to weld new sills to. I expect you are looking at sills, doorsteps and a few repairs once the sills are off, at least.

Door steps, sills and inner repairs atleast there.
To do it properly is not cheap.

I would recommend getting Rich to whip that off and replacing the sill and step properly. Go and see him, he's usually there Saturdays.

Mine was like that on the step but the oversill was fine so he just left it since otherwise we were looking at serious money. 3 years on it's still good (yes I know it will need doing properly one day).

If it's your daily driver prepare for it to be out of action for at least a couple of weeks, maybe more if there are other issues. Don't forget cost of paint on top. Rich will organise it all  :proud:
