Yop

Spi vs carb old story and I'm know that some have done conversions

with a carb

apart from being able to run more camshaft options

apart from being able to run over 100bhp

are there any other advantages of putting a carb on a Spi mini

I have come to believe that the Spi mini is ahead of the carb in fueling and efficiency (but has limited cam options and the stock ECU doesn't handle over 100bhp)

I am thinking of rebuilding a Spi mini to fast road spec that's why I asked the question

Not really, as you'll never pass an MOT emissions test, unless it's a pre August 1992 SPi

ah... just noticed you're not UK based, do you guys not have even more strict emissions rules over in Japan ?

Just to hijack this thread momentarily, I've just got a 1992 mini with no engine.

Is there any obvious signs that it was an SPI or carb? Fuel pump in tank?

The VIN number will tell you what sort of mini it is, as will the V5 documentation...

if it begins SAXXN then it's a 1300, if not then it's a 998. If it is a 1300, then if the 8th letter is X or Y then it's an SPi

Thanks Guessworks, eighth letter is D, so no SPi for me.

Spi mini has 2 yellow relays on right side of engine bay

and a big black box of tricks on the other side of the engine bay

yep we have a mean emissions test here,

but the guys sometimes seem to 'overlook' that element

but I had to redo my 'mot' twice once because I hadn't installed the headrests (really)

and once because of a cracked rubber boot on the ball joints (really)

no rust buckets allowed here
