Jared, they had 998 engines in production in SA with the canister oil filter until '74. They were used on the mini 1000 deluxe. So it could be one of those?

I'm not sure if the vans used the 998 or 1098 motor at that time.

It's quoted as a 1380, that's why I'm curious.

Could it just be a bored out 998?

Not to that extent, no.

Yeah I'm confused as it has 73.5mm omega Pistons in it which makes it a 1380 but the engine no sais it's a 998

Quite possible that an engine tag from a 998 has been put on a large bore block. It's common practice out here to keep from going through a police clearance to get the engine swap approved for the paperwork and licensing.

But that's certainly not a local big bore block, so could be GT.

No it's one from the uk as the block was shipped to SA

There we go, that was my next thought. That makes sense in terms of the tag, Use an SA tag to get around the import engine number.

So took the van to Castle Combe today, I bought a track session all was well until the noise test and it was to loud at 108db, so I was a bit annoyed with that, at least I took it on the parade lap. I also had the honour of parking it next to Rob Walker's motor bike headed mini!
